The 2019 Chilean Military Parade was held at O'Higgins Park in Santiago on 19 September 2019 to commemorate the Day of the Glories of the Army.
Presided over by President Sebastián Piñera, the military parade involved 7,639 personnel from the Chilean Armed Forces, Carabineros de Chile and the Investigations Police of Chile (PDI).[1][2][3]
The edition marked the first participation of the PDI in the parade and featured what was then the largest female participation in its history, with more than 1,200 women.[4][5]
Background
[edit]The annual military parade is held on 19 September as the principal ceremony commemorating the Day of the Glories of the Army. The 2019 ceremony commemorated the 209th anniversary of the Chilean Army.[1]
For the first time, the PDI was invited to participate with a marching contingent. Its delegation included personnel and students from the School of Police Investigations, together with foreign students from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Panama.[6]
The participation of women was also expanded for the 2019 edition. More than 1,200 women from the armed forces and police institutions were scheduled to participate, making it the largest female presence in the parade up to that point.[5][4]
Parade
[edit]The ceremony began during the afternoon with the arrival of Piñera at O'Higgins Park and the traditional presentation by the Club de Huasos Gil Letelier. Major General Esteban Guarda, commander of the presenting forces, subsequently requested presidential authorization to begin the march-past.[7]
A total of 7,639 personnel participated: 3,256 from the Chilean Army, 1,245 from the Chilean Navy, 1,164 from the Chilean Air Force, 1,549 from Carabineros and 425 from the PDI.[1][7][3]
More than 1,200 women participated in the ceremony. Among them were Corporal Kamilla Vega, the first female drum major of Carabineros, and Second Lieutenant Cristina Arenas, the first female Carabinero to serve in the presidential escort.[4][5]
The Navy's contingent included personnel from the Arturo Prat Naval Academy, Naval Polytechnic Academy, Naval Reserve and the 21st Miller Marine Infantry Battalion of the Amphibious Expeditionary Brigade.[8]
The Air Force participated with 1,164 personnel, including 163 women, and an aerial component of 43 aircraft. The flypast included ENAER T-35 Pillán training aircraft, the Halcones aerobatic team, F-16 and F-5 fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters.[9]
Carabineros participated with 1,549 personnel. The institution's presentation included its training establishments, specialized units and mounted and canine contingents.[4]
The PDI made its first appearance in the parade. Its contingent included detectives, police cadets and foreign students undergoing training in Chile.[6][5]
Foreign military delegations from Argentinag, Brazil and Peru participated alongside the Chilean military academies. Senior Army representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and the United States also attended as guests.[1][2]
The parade lasted more than two hours.[4]
