The 2013 Chilean Military Parade was held at O'Higgins Park in Santiago on 19 September 2013 to commemorate the Day of the Glories of the Army.
Presided over by President Sebastián Piñera, the military parade involved 8,464 personnel from the Chilean Armed Forces and Carabineros de Chile.[1][2][3]
The ceremony was the fourth and final military parade presided over by Piñera during his first presidency. It featured hundreds of female personnel, the participation of reservists and a large aerial component.[2][4]
Background
[edit]The annual military parade is held on 19 September as the principal ceremony commemorating the Day of the Glories of the Army. The 2013 edition formed part of the annual celebrations honouring the Chilean Army.[1][5]
The ceremony was the last military parade of Piñera's first presidential term, which had begun in March 2010.[1][2]
Preparations included a review of the participating formations at O'Higgins Park before the main ceremony. The planned deployment involved more than 8,000 personnel from the armed forces and Carabineros.[1][2]
The 2013 edition continued the integration of women into the principal formations of the armed forces and police. A total of 655 women participated among the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabineros contingents.[4]
Parade
[edit]Piñera arrived at O'Higgins Park during the afternoon accompanied by Defence Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter and other authorities. The ceremony began at 15:00 with the presidential review of the service academies.[1][2]
The opening ceremony included the traditional presentation by the Club de Huasos Gil Letelier, whose members offered the president chicha en cacho, followed by traditional Chilean festivities.[6]
The commander of the presenting forces subsequently requested presidential authorization to begin the march-past. The service academies of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabineros opened the military portion of the ceremony.[2][1]
A total of 8,464 personnel participated in the parade.[1][2][3]
Naval and Air Force contingents
[edit]The Chilean Navy participated with 1,399 personnel, including 101 women. Its contingent included personnel from the Arturo Prat Naval Academy, Naval Polytechnic Academy, Amphibious Expeditionary Brigade and Naval Reserve.[7]
Naval formations included cadets, sailors and marines, followed by reserve personnel representing the institution's civilian–military reserve component.[7]
The Chilean Air Force participated with its aviation and ground formations. Its contingent comprised 1,464 personnel and 78 aircraft. The aerial component included ENAER T-35 Pillán training aircraft, A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, F-16 fighters, reconnaissance and support aircraft, Lockheed C-130 Hercules transports and helicopters.[4][8]
The flypast formed one of the principal elements of the ceremony, with 32 F-16 fighters attracting particular attention during the aerial presentation.[6][8]
Army and Carabineros contingents
[edit]The Army provided the largest component of the parade, with 4,239 personnel. Its presentation included cadets, non-commissioned officers, infantry formations and motorized and armoured units.[4]
Historical and traditional formations also formed part of the Army presentation, alongside the institution's regular units.[4]
The motorized component included armoured and mechanized vehicles, with Mowag armoured vehicles among the equipment highlighted during the parade.[6]
Carabineros participated with 1,362 personnel from its training establishments and operational formations.[4]
Women participated throughout the different institutional formations. Contemporary reports recorded a total of 655 female personnel among the participating armed forces and Carabineros contingents.[4]
Foreign guests
[edit]Foreign military representatives attended the ceremony as guests of the Chilean Armed Forces. Among them were senior military officers from Canada, Ecuador, Spain and the United States.[4][7]
The ceremony lasted approximately two and a half hours and concluded after the passage of the participating military formations.[2]
