The 1998 Chilean Military Parade was held at O'Higgins Park in Santiago on 19 September 1998 to commemorate the Day of the Glories of the Army.[1][2]
Presided over by President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, the military parade involved contingents of the Chilean Armed Forces and Carabineros de Chile.[1][2]
It was the first edition attended by Ricardo Izurieta as commander-in-chief of the Chilean Army, following the departure of Augusto Pinochet from the post earlier that year.[3]
Background
[edit]The parade took place several months after a change in the leadership of the Chilean Army, with Izurieta succeeding Pinochet as commander-in-chief in early 1998. Contemporary photographs from Reuters and Agence France-Presse show Frei and Izurieta together during the ceremony, with Izurieta participating in the parade for the first time as Army commander-in-chief.[1]
Frei arrived at O'Higgins Park aboard the traditional presidential carriage and greeted spectators before presiding over the ceremony.[4]
Parade
[edit]The presentation included the officer-training academies and contingents representing the Chilean Navy, Chilean Air Force, Carabineros and the Chilean Army.[2]
The Army presentation included the School of Telecommunications and the Parachute and Special Forces School.[2] Personnel of the latter marched while singing Los viejos estandartes, the Army hymn.[2]
The parade also included motorized and mounted formations as part of the Army presentation.[2]
Izurieta participated in the ceremony as commander-in-chief of the Army, with contemporary Reuters coverage recording him saluting during the opening of the parade alongside President Frei. AFP photographs likewise documented Frei and Izurieta observing the march-past from the official tribune.[1]
