Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/India

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to India. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|India|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to India. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia.

A quick check of the history of this hijacked articles shows plenty of sockpuppetry, which seems to be because that's the only way of getting this person an article. He does not seems to meet WP:FILMMAKER or WP:GNG. Seems like notability is marginal at the moment. A lot of the references are brief and/or unauthored and/or WP:NEWSORGINDIA concerns. The last AFD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gowrishankar SRG (3rd nomination) ended as draftification. But I think at this point the title should be admin protected from recreation.Thilsebatti (talk) 02:23, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

The last AFD had Mushy Yank doing back and fourth on his TA after the EVA UX block. Assumed bad faith without knowing the context behind it. BengalMC (talk) 03:53, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Delete+Salt Per nomination. An editor from Mars (talk) 05:36, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Keep – I do not understand the nomination's conclusion that the subject fails WP:GNG. The article is supported by multiple independent reliable sources and the subject is primarily an actor, so filmmaker-specific guidance is not the central consideration. He has also received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor – Kannada at the 70th Filmfare Awards South which is a significant career achievement. Based on the available sourcing, the subject appears to satisfy WP:GNG and WP:ANYBIO. Any remaining issues with sourcing or tone can be addressed through normal editing rather than deletion.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Raunka sonkar (talkcontribs) 07:44, 5 August 2026 (UTC)  Raunka sonkar (talk contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic. reply

  • Delete and SALT - It's worth noting that this article is almost identical to Draft:Gowri Shankar SRG, which was entirely written by a now-banned UPE editor and was maintained by a bunch of Alakmarsaify socks. That, alone, is reason enough to delete any mainspace copies of this. The UPE and COI alone should mean that this person should only have an article if it has passed WP:AfC review. Per WP:PAY, you should put new articles through the Articles for Creation (AfC) process instead of creating them directly. This is the 5th AfD on this person in a very short space of time. Yes, there is some minor press coverage of an upcoming film that he is involved with but I am not convinced that that is enough to bypass clear prior consensus and let's call a spade a spade. It's clear from the history of the correct title Gowrishankar SRG that there is a non-organic push to get this person an article at any cost. Unless the COI or paid editing is disclosed as per our WP:COI policy, we should not be entertaining this. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 08:12, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply
As I've added SPA tags now, I'm disqualified from being able to !vote. Surely if this has been remade so many times without any real changes, this qualifies WP:G4? Obviously SALTing can be done on top. 11WB 💬 12:27, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply
The last deletion was at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gowrishankar SRG (2nd nomination), however, a new SPA has just added new sources to this article and changed some of the text, so I don't think it's a carbon copy of the previous article any more. In my experience, G4 is very strict and the addition of any new sources or prose immediately disqualifies it. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gowrishankar SRG (3rd nomination), was effectively a delete close but it could be technically argued as a draftify close, so may not be eligible either. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:33, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Fully Support Keep – I don't understand how the nominator concluded that the subject fails notability Huh? WP:BEFORE. Secondly most of the delete !votes appear to be from editors who are not familiar with Kannada-language sources. My reasons for keeping the article are: The subject clearly passes WP:GNG. The subject has received Filmfare recognition, which, in my view, supports notability under WP:ANYBIO and WP:NACTOR. The claim that the references are weak is not correct. There are many independent, journalist-written and authored reliable sources available, most of them in Kannada. The subject is not WP:TOOSOON. He has worked on four films, with three released and one upcoming. Even if there were concerns about earlier paid editing, that does not by itself determine whether the subject is notable. Notability depends on the availability of significant coverage in reliable, independent sources. Based on my reading of WP:ANYBIO, WP:NACTOR, and WP:GNG, I believe the subject may satisfy Wikipedia's notability requirements. If not, could you please identify the specific deficiencies that still need to be addressed? The article is supported by multiple independent reliable sources, including official recognition from Filmfare, coverage of the film's screening at the International Film Festival of India, and reporting from several independent publications:

All these sources are mostly about the movies rather than the subject himself. It also contains many interviews which is considered primary sources. Thilsebatti (talk) 12:10, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

I do not see a pass of WP:NBIO, WP:BASIC or WP:NAUTHOR. The available sourcing I could find on Google as well as listed in the article is mainly bylines, routine DUJ office-holder/election mentions, report credits, and quotes in articles about other topics, rather than significant independent coverage of Madhok herself. The article also has long-standing BLP sourcing problems. Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 00:14, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

I propose merging to Violence against Christians in India because there is no persisting WP:SIGCOV. There was no backlash like protests, a law passing or something similar. So, there is no evidence that this passes WP:LASTING either. The coverage is not WP:DIVERSE, except for the BBC, which regularly covers Indian events.

Now, the target page is not completely suitable for such an event, which did not garner lasting coverage. However, a page like List of attacks against Christians in India could be created due to the large number of attacks and coverage by outside sources. However, until that is created, the information in this page should be harbored there. If that does not convince people, then I choose draftification as my second choice. Typical corporate spam for an Indian tire manufacturer, declined as a speedy. The references here are the expected slew of PR junk, no evidence of notability. I propose merging to Subtitles, specifically into the "§ Same-language subtitling" section of that article, because there is not nearly enough on this topic for a substantive, stand-alone article (not to mention that Subtitles already has lots of information on SLS that this article is missing).

It would serve our readers better to just merge the India info + a few extra things from this article into Subtitles, rather than have the tiniest bits of extra info behind an extra click. Hugo P. Behrmann () 05:47, 4 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Proposing merger with Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. This article is about the recent amendment to the existing Act (the target article Act). The only amendments made were increasing fines and jail term period, the article basically covers about this amendment. There is no need for standalone article because this is not separate Act. The Anti Paper Leak Bill name also actually a media shorthand, it not official title, nowhere its Anti Paper Leak Bill, 2026. An amendment section is appropriate than this. Oppose - article technically cites the Mahabharata parenthetically, though we'd now want a non-brackets cite style, and secondary sources. The {{multiple issues}} tag was only just added this month, so maybe that's why article's issues have been unaddressed for years? Would imagine draftifying would make it less likely that flagged issues are addressed (no?), so oppose rn, and would oppose deleting as topic seems notable. - Asdfjrjjj (talk) 19:58, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Looks like a WP:FRINGE "Vedic Mathematics"-related thing. I'm not an expert in the history of Indian mathematics but I cannot verify that the term has any adoption in serious mathematical literature, nor that a multiplication table with digital roots was used in Islamic art or Vedic-period Indian mathematics.

Citations do not look reliable to me. I looked around to try to improve them and it seems all information dates back to I found a 1989 journal article by Lesley Jones, which is peer-reviewed but still not trustworthy IMO -- it is in a teaching journal, not a history journal, and claims Indian and Islamic origins but suspiciously does not refer to a single primary source. I found no reliable citations that could salvage this page. 11wx (talk) 07:30, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

EDIT: I found one source older than Jones: Bunyard and Brine, 1988, "Islamic Art: Vedic square" in Micromath journal. I can't access this paper but again, it's in a mathematics education journal, which is not a good citation for statements on math history. Historical origins would be the only thing propping up this article's notability, as the mathematics of it are trivial, and as far as I can tell the Vedic/Islamic connections may have been invented by Bunyard and Brine. 11wx (talk) 17:17, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Delete. Mathematically, this is trivial: just a multiplication table mod 9. But more to the point, we have no sources for this that could pass WP:GNG. The only footnotes are about a minor generalization to higher dimensions, and only one of them appears to be reliably published. The non-footnoted references are general reference books on mathematics (without page numbers and without content relevant to this), an unreliable web page, and a repeat of one of the footnotes. —David Eppstein (talk) 17:04, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Delete As noted above, it's just a multiplication table mod 9. A few bad-to-mediocre sources use the name "Vedic square"; none of them substantiate the history, which is all that the article could really have going for it in the best case. And if better sources did substantiate this as a motif in ancient art, that still wouldn't be enough to conclude that a whole article about it is the right way to cover the topic encyclopedically. Stepwise Continuous Dysfunction (talk) 18:45, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Delete Eppstein is correct; the digital root of in base is always equal to if . Observations in this article are almost all statements that are explained in Multiplicative group of integers modulo n or at the Cut the Knot EL at Modular arithmetic, since is a case where the generated group is cyclic. For example, every finite group has a Latin square as its Cayley table. No elaboration at all about the supposed significance of the tables in ancient cultures. It is unclear, in particular, if "Vedic" refers to an actual Vedic text about multiplication tables, Vedic Mathematics, or Bunyard and Brine's own invented version of the book's concept. If this concept does notably appear in art, it would be better covered at Multiplication table or Cayley table. Possibly there's a good source with similar information as the Cut the Knot page I mentioned earlier. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 19:14, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Keep: I'm not convinced by the above "it's trivial" rationales for deletion. I don't believe those hold much, if any, water. The nominator, oddly enough, provided examples of coverage that establishes its notability... yet they nominated this for deletion. This topic has much coverage in academia, such as this from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (who are without question reliable). I'll have a deeper search before this is due to close in a few days time. For now, I think this is notable and should be kept. 11WB 💬 00:59, 3 August 2026 (UTC)reply
The only connection between the paper you link and the mod-9 multiplication table appears to be some vague motivational woo involving the Sanskrit derivation of the word "vedic". It is not even using "square" with the same meaning: it is about circuits for squaring numbers, not about square tables of numbers. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:06, 3 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Thank you for fixing the page. It appears you are right, though the sources provided by the nominator still pass the lowest threshold of GNG. This would be acceptable as a redirect back to Vedic mathematics. Striking my earlier !vote. 11WB 💬 22:35, 3 August 2026 (UTC)reply
The point I was making in the nom is that the best citations I can locate are still of dubious quality -- GNG aside, verifiability is not there. To check that a mathematical concept is 1,000+ years old, I would expect corroborating evidence in multiple resources on the history of mathematics, and references to actual ancienf texts. We don't have that here, we just have a handful of papers recycling a single spurious factoid. I am admittedly making bold assumptions about a paper I can't read, but I believe the Bunyard and Brine paper is WP:FRINGE pseudohistory, which casts doubt on the reliability of the work by subsequent authors who repeat their claims uncritically -- if they fail a basic fact check, they are not reliable sources (all relevant sources have very few citations in Google Scholar). If there were reliable sources that debunked this pseudohistory then that would strengthen GNG, but I found none. 11wx (talk) 17:59, 4 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Just realised who you are! Good to see you up and around, @11wx! Complete coincidence we would cross paths at AfD. I just so happen to agree with that assessment, which is why I amended my !vote. • Strong keep - The nomination appears pretty conclusory to me. They just lump the sources together as "plenty of NEWSORGINDIA" without actually showing why the reliable independent sources in the article don't satisfy WP:GNG requirements. Just dropping "NEWSORGINDIA" isn't enough to prove someone isn't notable. In the article, there is good independent coverage from outlets like The Hindu, The Indian Express, India Today, Cinema Express, Hindustan Times. And on the day of release of subject's new movie, just after this nomination, reviews came for Srinivasa Mangapuram and reviews on her acting in Azaad were already there before this, sources of reviews talk about subject's performance. Sources like ANI or basic press releases can be removed or replaced as @Honeybrowneyes has raised concerns about it but that's just normal cleanup and editing procedure, basically pages keep on improving in wikipedia all the time, it doesn't mean the whole article fails GNG. Nominator mentioned WP:NACTOR might apply but doesn't explain why an actress who landed credited major roles in two notable movies, complete with independent review of Azaad (second movie reviews came after nomination), somehow misses the bar. I have removed the NDTV source already, and editors can clean up the weaker or promotional links (if they think any such type sources exist), but the actual independent coverage is more than enough to keep the article. 3. Also churnalism. 'Who is Rasha Thadani' by NDTV[4] is literally a web story. A very low-quality citation, in my humble opinion.
4. This The Hindu citation (ref. no. 9 and 10)[5] and this The Hindu citation[6] (ref. no. 15) are duplicate references (see: WP:DUPCITES) and one should be removed and other invoked.
5. Only five citations[7][8][9][10][11] (see note for latter) have bylines, the rest are published by 'entertainment desk' or similar names.

:Note: In this[11] citation, the article claims it's written by Vinita Kumar but when you go through it, you see her name nowhere but rather 'India Today Entertainment Desk.' At the end, 'published by Anurag Bohra' is mentioned.

This list existing by itself is not a good page for our readers for various reasons. WP:NOTDB means that random lists should not exist on Wikipedia, because it is not a statistics website. The Suicide in India page is not very developed. However, when it is further developed, it would be useful for the reader of that page to have a break-down by state. Articles on suicide in certain states would also be notable. Thus, when that page is further developed, this page would become redundant. It says "statistics should be placed in tables to enhance readability" – this is a table. There's also no other list of towns in India on Wikipedia so the suggestion to merge to India is baffling. If you can show me that these places are listed for each state that would be better. Reywas92Talk 14:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)reply

I propose merging to List of states and union territories of India because WP:NOTDB. This just lists Indian states by a numeral characteristic, which is not allowed on Wikipedia, as it is not encyclopedic. WP:NOPAGE also applies, since this could be included as a table. An artist lacking significant coverage in reliable sources. Fails WP:GNG. Last of The Time (talk) 05:57, 29 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Keep - the article is imperfect, but I see Indian Express, Hindustan Times, and Bombay Times - that's plenty sufficient to clear GNG. Jishara (talk) 19:03, 29 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Strong Keep – The subject appears to satisfy the requirements of WP and WP:ARTIST. There are multiple reliable, independent secondary sources that provide significant coverage of the artist and his work, beyond routine mentions or primary sources.

Examples of significant coverage from reliable sources include:

Multifarious Impressions of Ananta MandalThe Times of India. Capturing Landscapes on His CanvasThe Times of India. Treat for the sensesMillennium Post. Rich Canvases Saturate Watercolor EventHouston Chronicle, which discusses Ananta Mandal's award-winning work at the Watercolor Art Society–Houston exhibition.

Ananta Mandal: The monsoon muse - painting rain soaked realitiesAstaguru. The subject's artworks have been auctioned and exhibited by AstaGuru, one of India's leading fine art auction houses, further demonstrating recognition within the professional art community.

The subject has also held multiple solo exhibitions at established art institutions, including Jehangir Art Gallery, Nehru Centre, and Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, demonstrating sustained professional recognition.

The article also documents awards and recognitions from established organizations, including the Bombay Art Society, AIFACS, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, Government College of Art & Craft, The San Diego Watercolor Society, The Watercolor Art Society-Houston and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.

Taken together, these independent sources and achievements demonstrate that the subject has received significant coverage and satisfies Wikipedia's notability requirements.

This is the article's 3rd AfD nomination. Unless substantial new evidence or policy-based arguments have been presented that were not considered in the previous discussions, repeated nominations may be unnecessary. Based on the available evidence, I support keeping the article. If consensus is to keep, the AfD templates should be removed following the close of this discussion. • Delete. I see this has been withdrawn, but as I created a source assessment last night, I'd like to add it here as part of the record.

It looks like this watercolorist has won a handful of regional watercolor awards and has had reviews in The Times of India , Bombay Times, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, and the Afternoon Despatch & Courier see (Wikipedia:NEWSORGINDIA). 3 of the articles are "reviews" of the Nehru Centre Art Gallery GROUP exhibit in 2011. There is no particular notability for the Nehru Centre Art Gallery exhibition. The issue seems for be whether multiple mentions in borderline publications adds up to "significant coverage". Same with the regional "awards". Do multiple regional awards adds up to a significant award? In the previous AFD discussions, the quality of the sources is never convincingly presented. That is why the article keeps getting nominated for deletion. This artist does not meet WP:NARTIST. He has not been a substantial part of a significant exhibition, or won significant critical attention, or been represented within the permanent collections of any notable galleries or museums. I would argue that is is time for this article to go. The sum of the sources do not add up to notable. I think mine is a substantial policy-based argument. WP:TOOSOON. Strong keep – clearly notable – As with very strong independent sources the artist is meet clearly notable WP:NARTIST. More than 12 years after the article was created, it remains well sourced and supported by significant independent coverage, many significant shows, multiple significant all India and International Juried art shows awards, satisfying GNG. Based on the available sourcing and the outcomes of the previous two AfD discussions, I do not see a policy-based justification for deletion.

I'm not sure why this article is being nominated for AfD for a third time, as I don't see any new policy-based evidence showing that the subject no longer meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. However the deletion has been withdrawn.

  • Gujaratfirst.com is certainly not a WP:GNG worthy publication. It is part of a relatively recent media venture (launched around 2021) under a private group and even its own About page is largely self-promotional, highlighting the parent company and its achievements rather than addressing editorial credibility or independence. The platform is also more focused on revenue generation and audience reach.

  • Comment: I suspect this is the same subject as the first nomination from 2017, which ended in deletion. This iteration probably should have come to AfD much sooner than it did: it has been tagged as a poorly-sourced potential NBIO failure almost since its recreation in November 2023, was briefly tagged for PROD for two minutes in May 2024 before the proposer saw the big red text announcing the previous AfD's existence and self-reverted (but did not follow up with a second AfD or anything else), and based on the logs was only just returned to NPP this week after its initial 2024 review was vacated. No opinion on the article itself, but the signs–and the UPE blocks on both the 2024 reviewer and the article creator–certainly aren't encouraging (and that, combined with a G4 deletion not too long after the 2017 AfD, might mean that the salt shouldn't be taken off the table either). The subject of the page does not fulfil WP:SINGER or WP: It also does not have coverage to fulfil WP:SIGCOV. Their one significant movie was almost a decade ago which did not garner her any significant award or media coverage outside Nagaland. Thereby, it does not fulfil WP:NACTOR. For an event to exist on Wikipedia, it must pass WP:NEVENT, which this does not. Google Books shows three pages of results, but most of these are not from reliable sources. This is because the author is often not specializing is any relevant field and the publisher is not reputable. Google Scholar shows 2 results, one of which is a wiki (self-described) and the other is an inaccessible citation. Google News shows some coverage shortly after the event. Then, most of the other coverage is not WP:SIGCOV, except for which is not from a reputable media outlet. Relevant concerns from the NEVENT page are WP:LASTING, WP:GEOSCOPE (local to Kashmir), WP:CASESTUDY, WP:ROUTINE (terrorist attacks in Kashmir are very, common compared to other regions) and WP:DIVERSE (only news sources) HerrHeulsuse (talk) 11:13, 18 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Keep The article already has several citations from both local and international outlets, including The Independent' (UK) and Voice of America (US), which challenges the WP:GEOSCOPE concern raised above. Also, a quick search found additional coverage not yet cited, including articles in The Guardian,"Massacre in Kashmir slum renews fear of war"] and BBC News, "Kashmir killings condemned"]. The frequency of Kashmir insurgency attacks doesn't make this one non-notable. And WP:ROUTINE typically refers to scheduled, everyday coverage like weddings or baseball games, not a massacre. SupermarketCake (talk) 03:19, 19 July 2026 (UTC)reply
WP:NEVENT says
"Many events receive coverage in the news and yet are not of historic or lasting importance. News organizations have criteria for content, i.e.
news values
, that differ from the criteria used by Wikipedia and encyclopedias. A violent crime, accidental death, or other media event may be interesting enough to reporters and news editors to justify coverage, but this will not always translate into sufficient notability for a Wikipedia article."

Re: Significance, this attack appears on a U.S. Department of State list titled Chronology of Significant Terrorist Incidents, 2002. SupermarketCake (talk) 21:07, 4 August 2026 (UTC)reply
I'm inclined to think this is just a news story with no sustained secondary coverage. I tried to find a suitable merge target, but this is just isn't significant to any broader subject. Does the Qasim Nagar neighborhood have significant coverage besides a one-off event? If not, I'll support deleting or redirecting to List of terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 05:15, 19 July 2026 (UTC)reply
It probably does, in Kashmiri or another South Asian language, but we would need editors to work on it. I think that if we merge and redirect to your suggested page, then the history will be available to merge into a Qasim Nagar page if it is later created. HerrHeulsuse (talk) 10:29, 19 July 2026 (UTC)reply
Regardless of what ends up happening to the event article, I've created an article for the location since I was able to find some coverage in Hindi and Urdu. It's barebones, especially because I was restrained in what information I grabbed from the sources, since I was reading them through machine translation. Re: Significance, this attack appears on a U.S. Department of State list, aptly titled Chronology of Significant Terrorist Incidents, 2002.
Adding this: In reference to @Thebiguglyalien's comment on sustained secondary coverage, I'll agree that coverage is limited to 'lists of past attacks', (Times of India), passing mentions or remembrance articles from local outlets. However, the initial coverage was substantial and international (The Independent, VOA, Guardian, BBC, plus Tribune reporting and the above State Dept listing), which I'd argue meets WP:GNG on its own. SupermarketCake (talk) 21:47, 4 August 2026 (UTC)reply
WP:NEVENT:
  • "a burst or spike of news reports does not automatically make an incident notable"
  • "A violent crime, accidental death, or other media event may be interesting enough to reporters and news editors to justify coverage, but this will not always translate into sufficient notability for a Wikipedia article."
Being included in a U.S. Department list is not worth anything HerrHeulsuse (talk) 10:35, 5 August 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Comment. I looked at the sources provided by RGB49D. The first one is an academic paper and appears reasonable. The second and third are reports prepared by the company and cannot be used for notability. The fourth is a business which offers to provide a report on this company, for money: that cannot be considered a published source. M kuhner (talk) 18:40, 22 July 2026 (UTC)reply

*Keep In addition to the sources identified by RGB49D the subject has received substantial coverage in other independent, reliable sources.
