Capitalization of "War"

Why do some titles use "war" (Gaza war) instead of "War" (Kosovo War) and vice versa? ArionStar (talk) 16:32, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

The title is mostly based on what is the more common name used for the conflict among reliable sources per WP:COMMONNAME. War is not capitalized because it was not capitalized when used by a majority of reliable sources. The current title was debated and decided on in this requested move discussion, you can find data gathered on what name sources use there, from it's summary:

The capitalisation question wasn't discussed much in the discussion, and those who do reference it, nobody really defended the notion that it should be Gaza War, those referencing the question said it should be Gaza war rather than Gaza War. So per the stipulations of MOS:CAPS it is clear to me as the closer that the bar of "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of reliable sources" is not met.

The entire history of this page's title and debates surrounding it can be found at the top of this talk page. Mason7512 (talk) 23:56, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Edit request from WP:RFPP

The infobox of article states that over 1,154 Israeli security personnel died in the war, which is incorrect. The cited source clearly states that figure also includes soldiers killed by Hezbollah attacks, fighting in Lebanon, the West Bank and other fronts, as well as those who died due to accidents or even suicide, which is what their remembrance day (Yom Hazikaron) commemorates every year. The infobox is supposed to include only those who were killed in the October 7 attacks and fighting in Gaza ever since. I'd like to ask someone to please replace the number 1,154 for 864 using the following source (per WP:CALC, it's the sum of 331 soldiers and 58 police officers killed in Israel on October 7 plus 473 soldiers and 2 policemen killed in Gaza during the war): [1] Therefore, the total number of Israelis killed in the war (both civilians and security personnel) at the end of infobox should say 1,751+ (including dead hostages) instead of 2,041+

If that is too complicated, at least a footnote should be added to the 1,154 number saying the figure includes those killed in other related fronts of the war. Thank you very much. Davidhiestand (talk) 22:43, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hamas and PIJ in the Infobox

The reason i changed the current state of the Infobox is mainly because i saw that PIJ (the second largest faction in Gaza fighting Israel) was missing, in addition, i tried to replicate the format used in other similar infoboxes (like of the 2014, 2021 and 2022 wars/clashes), where Palestinian groups are put under either "gaza strip" or "palestinian militants" (especially groups which are formally or informally allied with each other and collaborate against Israel).

Both Hamas and PIJ are part of the "Joint Operations Room", so it would make sense for both to be included under it, especially considering the amount of sources which confirm the two groups to be actively collaborating against Israel.

Other groups such as PFLP, DFLP, PRC, etc - i kinda see why they were removed, the part they are taking in this war is minimal compared to Hamas and PIJ, and its good to make the infobox more concise as to not end up like the 2026 Iran war one, where it takes up way too much space. MySalsa22 (talk) 20:09, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

By the way, a good idea to also include these other groups would be using something similar to the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis, with a note detailing smaller groups involved in fighting. MySalsa22 (talk) 20:12, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Letter removal

@MySalsa22The letter I added had been removed from the summary intro of the Gaza War page as "undue for lede summary." I can understand that position. I don't understand why you removed it from the Genocide section of that same article. Experts on genocide are among the 5,000 signers: "A September 2026 letter signed by 5,000 individuals, including former Canadian Minister of Justice Irwin Cotler, historian Benny Morris and urban-warfare expert John Spencer rejected the genocide charge.[1][2]" Purplewriter (talk) 16:45, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Id suggest you add that letter to the proper article about the Gaza genocide, it is still undue in my view because it gives the same weight to that letter that it gives to the rest of the section (which includes analysis by several humans rights and international organizations condemning Israel's actions in Gaza), a letter signed by 5K individuals surely is important, but maybe only to the article about the genocide itself. MySalsa22 (talk) 17:43, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it's important to be here; some people may refer only to this page. Yes, Israel's actions have been and continue to be widely condemned, however, no court has deemed those actions genocide, so nothing is "undue" about adding one sentence on this letter. Purplewriter (talk) 15:45, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, the Gaza genocide page doesn't have a section anything that contradicts its conclusion, which strikes me as NPOV. Where on that article do you suggest a good place for this letter? Purplewriter (talk) 15:54, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Palestine as belligerent

I think Palestine must be added as belligerent to the article. We could do it written as de-facto state of Palestine or Palestinian government in Gaza. Hamas is currently in power in Gaza regardless of whether they came to power with legitimate or illegitimate ways. Israel is currently attacking against not only Hamas militants. But also Gaza civilians are the target. So all palestinians regardless of the fact that they are Hamas members or not, are attacked. Also one of condition of the peace is that Hamas gives power to Technocracy in Gaza. 2026 Yemen offensives are good example. In that article (I understand that not all articles should follow the same rule), Houthis are shown as part of Houthi Yemen as belligerent. Gawain (talk) 06:41, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Palestine is not allowed to have a national military to defend its land or people, and Israelis serving in their military can kill as many Palestinian civilians as they like, but it doesn't make them belligerents. So, I'm not sure putting Palestine as a belligerent makes sense. Sean.hoyland (talk) 09:10, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't know of any reliable source saying anything like that. That is the primary requirement before considering whether an idea should go into Wikipedia. NadVolum (talk) 19:28, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
