Georgia Pissinou (Greek: Γεωργία Πισσίνου) is a Greek engineer and aerospace executive. She is notable for her research contributions in orthopedic biomechanics and composite materials, as well as for her leadership in technology strategy at Hellenic Aerospace Industry S.A., a major Greek defense and aerospace manufacturer.

Education and research career

Pissinou studied engineering at the University of Nottingham. In 1980, while an undergraduate, she contributed to the International Conference on Finite Elements in Biomechanics, indicating early engagement with computational analysis of medical devices.[1]

She earned her PhD from the University of Nottingham in December 1983 with research on stress analysis and wear mechanisms in the Freeman-Swanson knee prosthesis.[2] Her doctoral work received recognition in the influential 1983 peer-reviewed survey by Huiskes and Chao on finite element analysis in orthopedic biomechanics, which cited her dissertation as a representative contribution to the early development of computational methods in orthopaedic implant research.[3]

Following her PhD, Pissinou worked at the Wolfson Institute of Interfacial Technology at the University of Nottingham in the 1980s. In 1986, she published peer-reviewed research on composite material failure modes with J. G. Morley in the Journal of Materials Science, a leading materials science journal. The article "Transverse ply cracking strains in (0°/90°) and (±θ°/90°) laminates" addressed a key failure mechanism relevant to aerospace composite structures.[4] The work was subsequently included in ASTM International standards for composite materials testing, demonstrating its adoption in engineering practice.[5] Her research on composite mechanics also appeared in international scientific literature, with citations in Russian-language materials science journals in the 1990s.[6]

Aerospace and defence career

In 2007, Pissinou was appointed Chief Technology Officer and Director of the Executive Office of Technology and Investments at Hellenic Aerospace Industry S.A. (ΕΑΒ), Greece's primary aerospace and defense manufacturer.[7] In this position, she was responsible for technology strategy and research-and-development initiatives at a company serving Greek and European defense programs.

During her tenure at ΕΑΒ, Pissinou participated in discussions with official Greek defense ministry bodies, including the Directorate-General for Defense Investments and Armaments (ΓΔΑΕΕ), regarding Greece's participation in European defense technology initiatives such as the European Defense Agency's Future Air Systems program.[8] She was also involved in meetings with the Ministry of National Defence concerning procedures for research and development programmes.[9]
