Dagospia is an Italian web publication specializing in press review and behind-the-scenes coverage of politics, economics, society, and lifestyle.[2] Founded and edited by Roberto D'Agostino, it has been active since 22 May 2000.[3]
Characteristics
[edit]Dagospia defines itself as an "online information resource with a generalist content that deals with behind-the-scenes stories."[3] Although often considered a gossip website, D'Agostino has described it as "a news bulletin."[3] The site averaged 12,000 daily visits in 2000 and 600,000 pages viewed in a single day in 2010.[4] As of 2024, the site reported revenues of €2.6 million and a profit of €506,000.[5] It is among the 50 most consulted news sites in Italy.[2]
The site features the photographic column Cafonal,[2] where protagonists and participants of social events in Rome are immortalized. The photographs have been published in the books Cafonal. Gli italiani nel mirino di Dagospia (2008) and UltraCafonal. Il peggio di Dagospia (2010).[6][7]
For some periods, the former President of Italy Francesco Cossiga was a source of information and behind-the-scenes stories for the site.[2]
Ownership and finances
[edit]As of 2024, the company Dagospia S.p.A. is owned 95% by Rocco D'Agostino (Roberto's son) and 5% by deputy editor Riccardo Panzetta.[1] Roberto D'Agostino, though not a shareholder, remains the sole administrator and receives an annual compensation of approximately €300,000.[1] The company reported revenues of €2.6 million in 2024, with a profit of €506,000, and a net equity of €4.3 million.[5] The trademarks Dagospia and Cafonal were revalued in 2020 at €600,000 and €240,000 respectively.[1]
Controversies
[edit]In June 2011, it was reported that Dagospia received €100,000 per year in advertising from Eni through the mediation of the fixer Luigi Bisignani, who had been convicted in the Enimont bribery case.[8] Dagospia defended the arrangement, stating that advertising on the site should be "a civic duty for industry," and subsequently sued la Repubblica for defamation over its coverage of the matter.[9]
