The rise of the internet and digital media has significantly changed how people access and consume information, with a growing preference for online sources. In some regions, this shift has contributed to the decline or disappearance of traditional print newspapers. The widespread use of the internet and smartphones has transformed the media landscape since the early 21st century, with audiences increasingly accessing news through e-readers, mobile devices, and digital platforms rather than traditional formats such as newspapers, magazines, or television news. News organizations face ongoing challenges in monetizing digital content and adapting print models to evolving consumption patterns. The Daily Telegraph, also known as The Telegraph, is a British daily broadsheet conservative newspaper published in London by Telegraph Media Group and distributed in the United Kingdom and internationally. It was founded by Arthur B. Sleigh in 1855 as The Daily Telegraph and Courier. The Telegraph was headlined by the BBC in 2004 as the UK's "other paper of record" and mentioned in the Broadview Guide to Writing in 2017 as a newspaper of record among others. The paper's motto, "Was, is, and will be", was included in its emblem which was used for over a century starting in 1858.
In 2013, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph, which started in 1961, were merged, although the latter retains its own editor. Dink was assassinated in Istanbul on 19 January 2007 by Ogün Samast, a 17-year-old Turkish nationalist. Dink was shot three times in the head dying instantly. Photographs of the assassin flanked by smiling Turkish police and gendarmerie, posing with the killer side by side in front of the Turkish flag, surfaced. The photos sparked a scandal in Turkey, prompting a spate of investigations and the removal from office of those involved. Samast was later sentenced to 22 years in prison by a Turkish court. He was released on parole for "good behaviour" on 15 November 2023, after spending 16 years and 10 months in prison. At Dink's funeral, over one hundred thousand mourners marched in protest of the assassination, chanting, "We are all Armenians" and "We are all Hrant Dink". Criticism of Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code became increasingly vocal after his death, leading to parliamentary proposals for repeal.
