The 2000 Chilean Military Parade was held at O'Higgins Park in Santiago on 19 September 2000 to commemorate the Day of the Glories of the Army.[1][2]
Presided over by President Ricardo Lagos, the military parade involved approximately 8,000 personnel from the Chilean Armed Forces and Carabineros de Chile, including around 5,000 members of the Chilean Army. The presentation included aerial, armoured and mounted contingents.[3]
It was the first military parade presided over by Lagos following his inauguration in March 2000. The ceremony also featured the participation of female cadets of the Chilean Air Force and historical presentations by Army units.[1][3]
After the ceremony, Lagos described the parade positively and expressed satisfaction with the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations.[4]
Background
[edit]Around 8,000 personnel were scheduled to participate in the ceremony, which continued the comparatively austere format adopted in preceding years. The formations comprised the three branches of the Armed Forces and Carabineros, together with aerial, armoured and mounted equipment.[3]
Among the principal novelties was the participation of women from the Air Force's aviation school, including female pilot cadets and a female member of its military band. The Army presentation was also scheduled to include horse-drawn Krupp artillery pieces dating from the early 20th century and a historical representation by the 6th Chacabuco Infantry Regiment, whose personnel wore uniforms based on those used during the War of the Pacific.[3]
The armoured component included Leopard 1 tanks of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Regiment Libertadores. Unlike the previous year, the tanks travelled through the parade ground under their own power rather than being carried by transport vehicles.[3]
Parade
[edit]The ceremony began at approximately 15:30. Before the march-past, members of the Gil Letelier equestrian club performed a traditional esquinazo and offered chicha to the authorities. Major General Sergio Candia, commander of the Santiago garrison, then formally requested authorization from President Lagos to begin the parade.[1]
The Bernardo O'Higgins Military Academy opened the presentation, followed by the Arturo Prat Naval Academy, the Captain Manuel Ávalos Prado Aviation School and the General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Carabineros School.[1]
The Air Force presentation included female cadets for the first time, as well as the Halcones aerobatic team and ENAER T-35 Pillán training aircraft. Army formations included personnel from its parachute and special forces school, who marched while singing Los viejos estandartes, together with armoured and mounted units.[1][3]
The parade concluded at 17:23, when Candia reported its completion to Lagos. The president congratulated the personnel who had taken part in the ceremony.[5]
