The 1993 Chilean Military Parade was held at O'Higgins Park in Santiago on 19 September 1993 to commemorate the Day of the Glories of the Army.[1]
The military parade was presided over by President Patricio Aylwin and attended by Army commander-in-chief Augusto Pinochet, with contingents of the Chilean Armed Forces and Carabineros de Chile participating in the ceremony.[1]
The parade took place less than four months after the Boinazo, one of the major episodes of civil–military tension during the Chilean transition to democracy. On 28 May 1993, Army personnel wearing black berets and combat equipment were deployed near government buildings in Santiago while Aylwin was abroad, amid tensions related to the investigation of the Pinocheques case.[2][3]
Background

[edit]Relations between the Aylwin government and the Army had been marked by several episodes of tension. In 1990, the Army carried out the Ejercicio de Enlace, and in May 1993 the Boinazo again involved the mobilization of military personnel amid disputes concerning investigations involving Pinochet's family.[2]
During the Boinazo, soldiers were deployed in central Santiago while Army generals met at the Armed Forces Building. The episode occurred while Aylwin was outside Chile and was associated with the investigation into financial transactions involving Augusto Pinochet Hiriart.[3][4]
The September parade consequently brought Aylwin and Pinochet together at the traditional military ceremony several months after the confrontation.[1][2]
Parade
[edit]The ceremony was held at O'Higgins Park on 19 September and followed the traditional presentation of Chile's military and police institutions.[1]
Aylwin attended the ceremony as President of Chile, while Pinochet participated as commander-in-chief of the Army.[1] It was Aylwin's final Military Parade as president before the end of his term in March 1994.[1]
