Woolworths New Zealand

Recently there was a decision to merge Woolworths New Zealand into Woolworths (New Zealand supermarket chain) due to overlapping content and to maintain consistency with other Woolworth supermarket articles: see Woolworth (disambiguation). I plan to make a start on the merger but would appreciate some guidance and support. I understand many of us would be away at the Wikimedia Conference in Wellington this weekend. Wellington task force launched

A Wellington task force was launched today at Wikicon 2026 to invite volunteers to improve articles in particular categories or topic areas related to Wellington City. The initial campaign focusses on articles in the Category:Tourist attractions in Wellington City. Other campaigns will follow. Editors with an interest in topics related to Wellington City are invited to sign up on the task force project page, and then put their username against any article in the current campaign that they are willing to improve._Marshelec (talk) 01:48, 3 May 2026 (UTC)

I just wanted to say that I had a really good time at Wellington WikiCon 2026. It was great to meet so many Wikipedians in person for the first time. I felt very welcome, awkward as I am. The presentations were really interesting and have inspired me. I really enjoyed the Wikizine event and am thinking of making one myself. The tours of Wellington Central Library and the national library were very exciting; I never expected to go into the underground area, which was really fun.

EduWiki Hub looking for NZers to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee

The EduWiki Hub is looking for expressions of interest from members of the Aotearoa editing community who would like to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee. The hub is working to ensure the committee reflects the diversity of the Wikimedia education community, but they have had very limited responses so far from our region. To allow more time and encourage broader participation, they’ve extended the deadline to 15 May 2026.

The Election Committee will play an important role in supporting a transparent, fair, and well-coordinated board election process. Responsibilities will include any of the following: documentation of the electoral process on meta-wiki, overseeing aspects of the nomination and election process, supporting communication with candidates and voters, and ensuring adherence to agreed election guidelines. Te Pūkenga category

I have a question regarding Category:Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology. Given that the current National-led coalition government has taken steps to disestablish the mega polytechnic and reinstitute the polytechnics as independent entities, should I depopulate that category? At the time of writing, Te Pūkenga consists of just five institutions: NorthTec, Tai Poutini Polytechnic, the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, Whitireia New Zealand and Wellington Institute of Technology (About us. The Government intends for them to leave Te Pukenga by 1 January 2027. We'll also need to update Template:Vocational education in New Zealand and List of public sector organisations in New Zealand to reflect these changes. I had a look at the list of central government organisations on the Public Service Commission's website and those 16 polytechnics for some reason are still listed as Crown entity subsidiaries of the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology. General copyright of NZ works will be extended to 70 years

An interesting press release from the Government came out yesterday - seems like there will be some changes made to the Copyright Act to extend the copyright for music to 70 years after publication and 70 years after death for other general works. Wikipedia operates under US copyright law. The major problem is that Commons wants things to be in both US and local public domain. There's a few edge cases where that can't be met (things in the US public domain which are still under copyright here), and that will increase. And it will mean that kiwis can't contribute to wikisource for e.g. the works of Ngaio Marsh, which would come out of US copyright around the same time as they would have become NZ-PD. With proposed deletions, you can just remove the tag on the article if you oppose the deletion. It's intended as a more streamlined process which avoids the full AFD process for uncontroversial deletions, but also has a much lower bar for stopping the deletion. Royal Oak Mall

This survived an AfD years ago, but it still needs sources. I'm not familiar enough with New Zealand sources to make educated judgement about reliable sources. Please help by adding some sources. Bearian (talk) 01:50, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Rationalisation of list articles relating to the Royal New Zealand Navy

I've been considering a merge of several list articles of the format 'Ship type' ships of the RNZN. This is because we already also have the standard two list articles,List of active Royal New Zealand Navy ships, and List of ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy. With the RNZN being a small navy the list articles by ship type are never going to be bigger than your average stub so this to me is a uncontroversial change. Except I then read Minesweepers of the Royal New Zealand Navy, which is a little more than a list article, having some prose sections as well. The ship classes and individual ship articles are mostly fine and don't need much change.

I'd welcome feedback before I put together a formal merge proposal to get rid of the Ship type list articles? Duncnbiscuit (talk) 07:34, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

Hi @Duncnbiscuit: I agree that it would be a good idea to merge the List of active Royal New Zealand Navy ships into the List of ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The Minesweepers of the Royal New Zealand Navy article is little bit trickier. That could work as a standalone specialist article. If the list of current ships is removed there might be a problem for somebody finding a list of current ships (I known to sort the table but casual users might find it hard). Possible link to Royal New Zealand Navy#Current at the top of the article? - - SimonLyall (talk) 06:11, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

Just to clarify. I am not suggesting to merge the active ships article with the all ships article, those separate articles are the standard pattern for most navies on Wikipedia. The articles that I think need merging are Ship Type lists, i.e. Frigates of..., Corvettes of..., Cruisers of.... They are mostly stub size.

I highlighted Minesweepers of as an exception because it was more than a list article. however, I actually think that the extra content of the Minesweeper article could be merged into the ship class or individual ship articles.Duncnbiscuit (talk) 07:25, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

Nicola Willis article

The Sixth National Government, 2023–present section of the Nicola Willis article reads like a shopping list. It definitely needs some pruning and condensing but thought I would seek help on how to go about it. One idea I have is to merge the various budget sub-sections into one Budgets section. It is a pity that Kiwimanic (talk · contribs) has turned out to be a sock puppet of the banned Offender9000 (talk · contribs) from the 2010s. He did write several articles including the Wrongful conviction of David Lyttle, the Seizure of Shaun Allen's farm and the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court, which would now have to be recreated and rewritten by other users. Longest name

Hello my name is Laurence Watkins and I have the longest personal name in the world having 2253 middle names. In 1990 I won a High court case against the Registrar General of Births Deaths and Marriages in the High Court in Wellington which resulted in changes to the law about how many names a person can have and restrictions on having a title included in your name eg Lord Duke King etc. I am in the Guinness World Records and my story has been in many different countries Japan India America Brazil Britain. Yes I paid for a person to follow the rules and guidelines which they didn’t do so I have been restricted from posting until the end of November and I have certainly learned a valuable lesson about trusting freelancers to follow the rules of Wikipedia but as my post explains I am interested from someone interested in New Zealand history regarding the High Court ruling in 1990 which was a major win and had ramifications because the laws were changed because of it. Well there is very little that you can do. If you are notable enough for an article, I doubt anyone here would want to create it out of fear of being accused of paid editing. I had heard of you before you posted on this talk page and I tend to create articles about odd subjects like this (I once created an article about someone who marries trees) and I have to say this posting has probably set the chance of me creating this article to 0. I hate to speak so negatively but I just want you to understand that posting on talk pages probably isn't going to do much for you. Wikipedia is updated all the time and several hundred articles are created each day. Some articles just take a long time to be created, just out of random chance, I mean for example the Edmonds (brand) article took a surprisingly long time to be created -- only in 2024. If you are notable enough for an article, then your time will come, but asking for the article to be created might just delay it even more. June updates from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand

A group of NZ editors attended the ESEAP Wikimedia Conference in Taiwan and have shared their experiences. Our #1Lib1Ref campaign with Wikimedia Australia was a success, with impressive growth on our 2025 achievements. The Wikimedian in Residence at Otago University was featured in LIANZA's Library Life magazine (pages 14-15). Members of the Auckland editing community got a chance to chat with Jimmy Wales while he was in town. Commons Across Cultures is a new collaboration launched between NZ and Peru, and the ESEAP Youth Group is looking for young editors (16-30yrs) to get involved. I am looking for the following results from the New Zealand Figure Skating Championships:

Internet Wayback Machine

Hi everyone. Just to let you all know that the Internet Wayback Machine seems to be unable to save webpages from the Radio New Zealand website. It keeps redirecting to something like this page with a message apologising that it cannot deliver to that page.
