Former good article nomineeKobe Bryant was a Sports and recreation good articles nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There may be suggestions below for improving the article. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

Younger picture in the infobox?

[edit]

Continuing the discussion from Talk:Kobe Bryant/Archive 7#Younger picture in the infobox?, can we establish a new consensus for a younger picture in the infobox as similarly in said discussion, 2007 was at the midpoint of Kobe Bryant's career at 29 years of age. By 2014 he was already in his 18th season. I nominate this photo: File:Kobe Bryant 07.jpg or this: File:Kobe Washington Warmup.jpg which was reverted by @Bagumba which lead me to start a new consensus. Here's a Side by side of aforementioned imaged and current:

I prefer "Kobe_Bryant_2014.jpg", which is an action shot of him in uniform, playing in a game, and him pretty much looking straight forward, providing a fuller view of his face. —Bagumba (talk) 06:04, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
"Kobe_Bryant_2014.jpg" is Bryant in action during a game, wearing a Lakers jersey and holding a basketball. It is a relatively absolute picture and the best depiction of Bryant from those options. CalDoesIt (talk) 09:22, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed with Bagumba and CalDoesIt. DaHuzyBru (talk) 09:54, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Bagumba and CalDoesIt. The year the photo was taken is a relatively low-priority distinction that the average reader is unlikely to organically distinguish or care about unless it's a drastic visual difference, which this is not. If the year was removed from the caption, it would be a non-issue aside from the tiny slice of us who have the knowledge and inclination to poke around on Commons. I will also add that purple contrasts less than yellow in a dark background, and the yellow is a more iconic and symbolic color for the Lakers. I raised several of these points (and similar ones) in the last linked discussion and see that they haven't been meaningfully addressed here, including multiple MOS points. personally i think Kobe Bryant 7144 adjusted.jpg is a much better photo then all 3, fits the box well, you get a clear look at his face, its in game action Imdeadinside12 (talk) 13:37, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I prefer a shot with him in motion handling the ball, as opposed to just standing there waiting for a free throw. —Bagumba (talk) 14:04, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Between the current and the #8 shot, I'd go with the #8 shot also. A straight on shot (unlike all of the other photos) plus with the more vibrant Lakers home colors.

I’d like to point to the recent consensus reached on Talk:Lindsey Graham. In that discussion, editors agreed that using "prime or when he was most prolific" 2013 photo over a 2025 photo for a long-serving public figure is preferred. This standard applies to politicians and public figures beyond just sports figures. I believe a similar approach is appropriate here to ensure the most representative image is used for the reader.—JoeJohnson2 (talk) 13:41, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pennsylvania Player of the Year

[edit]

There's a dubious statement that he was "Pennsylvania Player of the Year" as a high school junior. I've only found that he won an AP Penn POY award as a senior in 1996.

It seems the content for the junior award was added in 2011 and sourced to JockBio.com. The source was recently removed from the article and replaced with a 2020 citation to nbcphiladelphia.com. However, that's likely WP:CITOGENESIS, lifted from Wikipedia. Ideally, this would need to be cited to a source from before September 15, 2011, when it was added to WP.

I'll remove this claim from the article. I added the AP Penn POY award to List of career achievements by Kobe Bryant. It seems too minor to mention in his bio, given the major national honors he won that same year as a senior. —Bagumba (talk) 05:52, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Removed here. —Bagumba (talk) 06:42, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree, apologies for not explaining removal of Parade award. Will leave that. Jumplike23 (talk) 17:50, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

"No such parameter"

[edit]

How is there no such parameter when I added one already? Masterlet 13:13, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Parameters are "baked into" the template, meaning you can't just add a parameter name and hope it appears when you hit publish. Seasider53 (talk) 13:16, 26 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
