The Medal for Courage, also known as the Medal of Courage (Armenian: Արիության մեդալ), is a state medal of the Republic of Armenia, awarded by the President of the Republic of Armenia for personal bravery demonstrated in defense of the motherland, protection of public order, national security service, judicial enforcement, and rescue operations, as well as for fulfilling official or civic duty under life-threatening conditions.[1]
History
[edit source]The medal was established by law on 26 July 1993, alongside several other state medals of Armenia, including the Mkhitar Gosh Medal, Mkhitar Heratsi Medal, and Movses Khorenatsi Medal.[2]
Award criteria
[edit source]The medal is awarded to service members of the Armed Forces of Armenia, employees of the Ministries of Internal Affairs and National Security, the Department of Emergency Situations, and the Customs Service, as well as to other individuals, for courage displayed in defending the country, maintaining public order, and carrying out rescue operations or official duties under conditions dangerous to life.[1][2]
Recipients
[edit source]The medal has been awarded by presidential decree to numerous service members of the Armed Forces, police, and other state bodies. For example, a senior police officer serving in Armenia's regions was awarded the Medal of Courage in 1998, according to a Republic of Armenia government biography, in addition to other state and departmental awards received later in his career.[3]
