The Mkhitar Gosh Medal (Մխիթար Գոշի մեդալ) is a state medal of the Republic of Armenia, awarded by the President of the Republic of Armenia for outstanding state and social-political activities, as well as for significant services in the spheres of diplomacy, law, and political science.[1]
It is named after Mkhitar Gosh, a 12th-century Armenian clergyman, writer, and codifier of Armenian civil and canon law.[2]
History
[edit]The medal was established by law on 26 July 1993, alongside several other state medals of Armenia, including the Mkhitar Heratsi Medal, Anania Shirakatsi Medal, and Movses Khorenatsi Medal.[3]
Award criteria
[edit]The medal is awarded for outstanding political, public, and state activities, as well as for notable achievements in diplomacy, political science, and law.[4] It has frequently been awarded to foreign statespeople and legislators for their contribution to strengthening Armenia's bilateral relations and to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.[2][5]
Recipients
[edit]Recipients of the Mkhitar Gosh Medal have included:
- U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman, awarded by President Serzh Sargsyan in 2012 for his efforts on behalf of the Armenian-American community and U.S.–Armenia relations.[2]
- German Bundestag member Cem Özdemir, awarded by President Serzh Sargsyan for his contribution to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Bundestag.[5]
- U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern, awarded by the Armenian Ambassador to the United States in 2022 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Armenian–U.S. diplomatic relations.[6]
- Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, awarded by President Vahagn Khachaturyan in 2023 for strengthening relations between Armenia and Luxembourg.[7]
