Yehezkel Danin
Yehezkel Danin (1868-1946) was a Jewish businessman and an entrepreneur, one of the founders of Tel Aviv. Born in Poland, Yehezkel Danin moved to Palestine under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in 1886 and then settled in the city of Jaffa. He was one of those people who played a role in the creation of Ahuzat Bayit, which gave birth to Tel Aviv in 1909.
Early life and immigration
[edit]Yehezkel Danin was born in 1868 in Poland under the surname Socholovsky. He immigrated to Palestine in 1886 as part of the First Aliyah and subsequently became active in the Jewish community. [1]
Life and work in Jaffa
[edit]After moving to Jaffa, Danin worked as a merchant and opened a grocery store. He also became involved in community organizations, including the Sha'ar Zion Library and the B'nai B'rith lodge in Jaffa.
Founding of Tel Aviv
[edit]Danin was one of the five figures associated with the initial idea of establishing a new Jewish city near Jaffa. Alongside Akiva Arieh Weiss, Meir Dizengoff, David Smilansky, and Yitzhak Hayutman, he participated in the establishment of Ahuzat Bayit, which became the foundation of modern Tel Aviv.
Family
[edit]Danin married Rachel Yellin, connecting him to the prominent Yellin family of Jerusalem. Their son Aharon Danin, born in 1910, is described in historical records as one of the earliest children associated with Tel Aviv. [2]
Legacy
[edit]Danin's name has been commemorated in Tel Aviv through Yehezkel Danin Street. He died in 1946 and was buried alongside Rachel Danin in Trumpeldor Cemetery in Tel Aviv.
