Wikipedia:WikiProject Formula One/Updates

Since Formula One is a constantly-changing subject, its pages need constant updating. The following guidelines should help when updating F1-related articles.

After first practice

• Update {{F1stat}} (entries)
• Update {{F1cstat}} (entries, drivers, totalentries)
• Update {{Latest F1GP}}
• Update {{F1Tyre}}

After qualifying

• Update {{F1stat}}, {{F1cstat}} and {{F1R2026}} (pole position)
• Update Pole position#Top ten most Formula One pole positions if required, specifically if Leclerc or Alonso make their way into the top 10 or Verstappen scores a further 9 pole positions in 2026 (in most cases, no manual update will be required as the table uses {{F1stat}} and Hamilton's position in the table can't change in 2026)
• Remove the "Most races without a pole position" record from Esteban Ocon#Formula One records if Ocon sets pole.
• Shift Albon or Ocon from List of Formula One driver records#Most races before first pole position to List of Formula One driver records#Most races before first pole position if either sets pole.

After the sprint (if there is one)

• Update {{F1stat}}, {{F1cstat}} and {{F1R2026}}
• Update List of Formula One sprint winners

After the race

• Update {{F1stat}} and {{F1cstat}} (starts, wins, podiums, fastestlaps, careerpoints, seasonpoints, seasonposition)
• Update {{F1estat}} if required (in most cases no manual update will be required as the values are derived from {{F1cstat}})
• Update {{F1R2026}} (race results and points)
• Update the race report, e.g. 2026 Spanish Grand Prix
• Update the relevant race article, e.g. Spanish Grand Prix
  • Update the "Winners By Year" table
  • Update the "Multiple Winners" tables, if required
  • Update the "Last race" details in the infobox
• If the race was the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, update the date of the latest race in Sport in Azerbaijan#Motorsports
• Add the race to the relevant "XXX Grand Prix" template, if there is one in Category:Formula One navigational boxes, e.g. {{Italian Grand Prix}}, {{Brazilian Grand Prix}}, etc
• Update the article for the circuit at which the race was held, if necessary
• Update the current season article, i.e. 2026 Formula One World Championship:
  • Update the tables in the "Results and standings" section
• Update the articles for all participating drivers:
  • Update the "Career summary" table, if required (most of the time no manual update should be required as the current season values are based on {{F1stat}})
  • Update the "Complete Formula One results" table (this will typically update automatically based on {{F1R2026}})
  • Update the "Records" section (if there is one), if required:
    • Fernando Alonso#Formula One records will need updating after every race (Longest time between first and last starts, Total career finishes, Furthest distance driven in F1)
    • List of career achievements by Max Verstappen will need updating after every race (the "as of" statement if nothing else)
    • List of career achievements by Lewis Hamilton will need updating after every race (the "as of" statement if nothing else)
  • Update Charles Leclerc's pole-win conversion rate if necessary (search for "conversion rate" in the body of the article)
  • Update Charles Leclerc's position on the all-time poles list if it changes (search for "eleventh-most" in the body of the article)
• Update the last win in the infobox in the relevant "Formula One drivers from <country>" article, e.g. Formula One drivers from Italy
• If it's the driver's first win, add their article to Category:Formula One race winners and add them to the race wins column at List of Formula One drivers#By country
• If Lando Norris achieved a Grand Slam, remove his name from the list of World Champions who didn't/haven't achieved one at Grand Slam (Formula One)#History
• If Max Verstappen didn't start the race, change the "Active Pursuant" and associated "Streak" columns in the first row of Iron_man_(sports_streak)#Iron_man_leaderboard to the appropriate driver and number
• If a driver started their first race, update the number of drivers who have started a Grand Prix in the third paragraph of List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions
• Update FIA Super Licence#Active penalty points
• Update the articles for all participating constructors, as required. Most of the numbers in these articles will auto-update, as they are based on {{F1cstat}}. Specific items which may require manual updating are:
  • the "Most 1–2 finishes", "Most qualifying 1–2s" and "Most laps led" rows of the table in Scuderia Ferrari#Formula One results; most of the other figures in that table should auto-update
  • the "Last win" column in Scuderia Ferrari#Ferrari-supplied Formula One engine results, if a Ferrari-engined car wins (the number of wins, poles and fastest laps should auto-update)
  • in Team Enstone, the number of drivers who have driven for the team (in 2 places) and the list of winners and podium scorers in Team Enstone#Renault/Alpine
  • the results table in AMR GP (in most cases, no manual update will be required - the Points and WCC columns auto-update)
• Update the corresponding "XXX Grand Prix results" article, e.g. McLaren Grand Prix results, if required. Note that most of these articles will auto-update as the current season values are based on {{F1R2026}} and {{F1cstat}}
• Update the articles for all participating cars:
  • Update the infobox, if required. In most cases, no manual update will be required, as the table contents are based on {{F1cstat}}
  • Update the results table, if required. In most cases, no manual update will be required, as the table contents are based on {{F1R2026}} and {{F1cstat}}
  • Update the importance on the talk page per Wikipedia:WikiProject Formula One/Assessment if appropriate
  • Update the stats in the lead of Mercedes W17, Ferrari SF-26 and McLaren MCL40
  • If the race was held at the Shanghai or Magny-Cours and a new lap record was set, remove the track from the list at Ferrari F2004#Legacy of the tracks at which the F2004 still holds the lap record
• Update engine manufacturer infoboxes and results tables:
  • Honda in Formula One#Formula One engine results
  • Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains#Formula One engine results
  • Ferrari engine customers' Grand Prix results, Mercedes engine customers' Grand Prix results, Honda Grand Prix results and Red Bull Powertrains#Formula One engine results should auto-update as the current-season values are based on {{F1R2026}} and {{F1cstat}}
  • the "xxx as a Formula One engine manufacturer" infoboxes in Mercedes-Benz in Formula One, Scuderia Ferrari, Honda in Formula One and Red Bull Powertrains should auto-update due to {{F1estat}}
• Update the "as of" statement and stats in the third-to-last paragraph of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains#History
• Update the "as of" statement, stats and table in Mercedes V6 hybrid Formula One power unit#Statistics
• Update the stats in Honda V6 hybrid Formula One power unit#Season statistics for hybrid era Honda engines
• Update List of Formula One drivers (usually just the "as of" statements and the number of WDC races)
• Update List of Formula One driver records
  • If Kimi Räikkönen's position on the list of most podium finishes, most fastest laps or most race starts changes, update the lead of his article
  • If a driver enters the "Youngest drivers to start a race" table, update Esteban Tuero's position on the list in his article.
• Update List of Formula One constructor records
• Update {{F1 records date}}
• Update List of Formula One race records
• Update the third paragraph of List of Formula One seasons (the "as of" statement and the total number of races held to date)
  • If a driver has won their first race of the season, increment the number of winners in the current season row
• Update List of Formula One polesitters (the 3 tables, the 3 "correct as of" statements and the first and third paragraphs of the lead)
• Update Pole position, if necessary
• Update List of Formula One drivers who set a fastest lap (the 3 tables, the 3 "correct as of" statements and the lead, including the "The most recent driver to set their first fastest lap" bit if a driver sets their first fastest lap)
  • If the order of the top 10 changes, update Fastest lap#Top ten drivers in Formula One history with the most fastest laps
• Update DHL Fastest Lap Award, if necessary
• Update Fastest lap, if a driver sets their first fastest lap
• Update the "as of" statement and number of WDC races in the third paragraph of List of Formula One points systems. Increase the number of drivers/constructors who have scored points if a driver/constructor scores their first point(s). Update the number of races for which half points have been awarded if necessary. Update the second paragraph of the lead if Red Bull surpass Mercedes' points total
  • If Fernando Alonso scored points, update the time between his first and last points scores in the second paragraph of the "Records and achievements" section
• Update List of Formula One Grand Prix winners (the 3 tables, the 3 "correct as of" statements and the third paragraph of the lead)
  • If Lewis Hamilton wins, update the time between his first and last wins in the second paragraph
  • If the order of the top 10 changes, update the following if necessary:
    • the section in Nigel Mansell where it says "Mansell ... is eighth overall on the Formula One race winners list behind ...",
    • the following statement in Ayrton Senna: "... is the sixth-most successful driver of all time in terms of race wins", and
    • the "List of Formula One Grand Prix wins by <driver>" articles for affected drivers (most of these articles state where the driver sits on the list)
• Update List of Formula One Grand Prix winners (constructors) (both tables, the "correct as of" statements and the second paragraph of the lead if necessary)
• Update List of Formula One Grands Prix (the 3rd and 4th paragraphs of the lead, the "as of" statement and the three tables)
• Update List of Formula One circuits - update the "as of" statement and the "Seasons" and "Races held" columns. If it was the first race at a new circuit, update the number of circuits to host a race and the latest circuit to host a race in the "History" section.
• Update Formula One engines#Records (the "as at" statement and the tables)
• Update the lead of List of Formula One constructors. Update List of Formula One constructors#Constructors for the 2026 season, if required. In most cases, no manual update will be required to this section, as the values in the table are based on {{F1cstat}}
• Update List of Formula One engine manufacturers#Engine manufacturers, if required. In most cases, no manual update will be required, as the values on the table are based on {{F1estat}}
• Update Formula One tyres#Manufacturers (the "as of" statement and Pirelli's statistics in both tables)
• Update Portal:Formula One/Championship standings
• Update {{F1Laps2026}}
• If the race was red-flagged, update List of red-flagged Formula One races (add the race to the table and update the third paragraph of the lead)
• If applicable, update 107% rule#List of 107% rule violations
• Update Skid_block#Violations if applicable
• Update Grand Slam (Formula One) if applicable
• If all drivers were classified as finishers, update the second paragraph of 1961 Dutch Grand Prix
• If the drivers' champion has been decided at this race, update List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions (lead and tables), Template:Formula One World Drivers' Champions and List of Formula One seasons. Update the WDC counts in List of Formula One drivers (both tables), List of Formula One constructors and List of Formula One engine manufacturers
  • If it's a German driver, update the number of championships won by German drivers in Portal:Formula One/Did you know/22
  • If it's Lewis Hamilton, update List of career achievements by Lewis Hamilton
  • Add the championship-winning car to Category:Formula One championship–winning cars if it's not already there
  • If the car was designed by Adrian Newey, update Adrian Newey#Formula One Championships (the table and the lead-in text) and the third paragraph of the article lead
  • If it's a Mercedes driver, update Tyrrell Racing#Legacy
• If the drivers' champion has been decided earlier in the season, update the statistics in List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions
• If the constructors' champion has been decided at this race, update List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions (lead and tables), Template:Formula One World Constructors' Champions and List of Formula One seasons. Update the WCC count in List of Formula One constructors and List of Formula One engine manufacturers
  • If it's Red Bull, update the number of constructors' titles in the lead of Dietrich Mateschitz
  • Add the championship-winning car to Category:Formula One championship–winning cars if it's not already there
  • If the car was designed by Adrian Newey, update Adrian Newey#Formula One World Championships (the table and the lead-in text) and the third paragraph of the article lead
  • If it's Mercedes, update Tyrrell Racing#Legacy
  • If it's McLaren, increase the number of WCCs in Bruce McLaren (search for "McLaren Group, whose achievements have included winning")
• If the constructors' champion has been decided earlier in the season, update the statistics in List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions
• If something unusual happened, e.g. a 1-2 finish for German drivers, no European on the podium, etc, check the race report for the last time this happened and see if there's a statement there that needs to be updated or removed.

At the end of a season

Y = done at the end of the 2025 season; N = not (yet) done at the end of the 2025 season; * = partially done at the end of the 2025 season;   = not (or only partially) done at the end of the 2025 season but now doesn't need to be done

• Just before the final race of the season:
  • Y Update the team article infoboxes to include new season details (drivers, chassis, engine, etc.), leaving the old season details in place.
  • Y Update the driver article infoboxes to include new season details (team, car number), leaving the old season details in place.
  • Y Update the "Formula One drivers from <country>" articles' infoboxes to include new season details (including countries with no drivers for the new season)

(It's recommended to do these updates before the new season fields are unhidden in the templates, so that the correct/correctly formatted information is already in place when the fields are unhidden, thereby avoiding well-intentioned but malformed infobox updates immediately after the completion of the final race of the season)

• During the final race of the season, or immediately afterwards:
  • Y Unhide the new season fields in {{Infobox F1 team}}.
  • Y Unhide the new season fields in {{Infobox F1 driver}}.
  • Y Update {{Formula One teams}} to include information from both the old and new seasons. See this version as an example.

(It's recommended to do these updates while the final race of the season is in progress, to avoid well-intentioned editors hacking the driver/team infoboxes or the teams template because they don't show their favourite driver's new team the second the race finishes)

• Any time after the completion of the final race of the season:
  • Y Update the number of Championship season which have been run in the lead of List of Formula One seasons
  • Y Add the new season link to {{Formula One}} (but leave the old season link there too), see this version of the template as an example.
  • Y Add new season information to team navboxes (e.g. {{McLaren}}) Old season information should be retained until 1 January.
  • Y Update the "Last season" fields in the team and driver infoboxes to refer to the just-completed season (including de-populating the fields for teams and drivers who didn't compete in the just-completed season, but competed in the previous one).
  • Y Update Portal:Formula One/Next Grand Prix and subpages.
  • Y Update the heading of the old season "cars" template (change "that compete in" to "that competed in").
  • Y Update old season car articles to say "was driven by" instead of "is being driven by".
  • Y subst transclusions of {{LatestF1GP}} in old season car infoboxes. Suggest doing the substing by hand rather than using a tool like AutoWikiBrowser, which leaves behind lots of extraneous markup.
  • Y Update the "Highest season finish" parameter if necessary in the "Formula One drivers from <country>" articles' infobox.
  • Y Add parameter for next year in Template:Infobox F1 nationality and Template:Infobox F1 nationality/doc following the same style as for the current year (e.g. After the final race of 2026 add the parameters for 2027 following the same style as for 2026)
  • Y subst transclusions of {{F1cstat|seasonposition}} and {{F1cstat|seasonpoints}} in constructor, constructor results and engine supplier results articles (don't forget AMR GP). Suggest doing the substing by hand rather than using a tool like AutoWikiBrowser, which leaves behind lots of extraneous markup. Consider leaving this until when the new season rows are added to the table, so the markup can be copied.
  • Y subst transclusions of {{F1cstat}} in old season car articles. Suggest doing the substing by hand rather than using a tool like AutoWikiBrowser, which leaves behind lots of extraneous markup. Consider leaving this until the new season car article has been created, so that the formulas for number of races/wins/poles/podiums/fastest laps can be copied from the old season car article into the new season car article (of course, if the substing is done earlier, the calculations can always be retrieved from the old season car article history)
  • Y subst transclusions of {{F1cstat}} in List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions
  • Y Add the car of the Drivers' and Constructors' champions to Category:Formula One championship–winning cars
• Once the new season "cars" template has been created
  • Y Unhide the "next" link in the titlebar of the old season "cars" template
  • Y Add the new season Red Bull and RB cars to {{Red Bull}} (i.e. the general Red Bull template, not {{Red Bull Racing}})
• Any time after 00:00 on January 1 (UTC):
  • Y Change {{Formula One circuits}} to list the new season circuits as "current" instead of the old season circuits
  • Y Change {{Formula One Grands Prix}} to list the new season races as "current" instead of the old season races
  • Y Update {{Formula One constructors}} to list the new season constructors as "current"

  • Y Update {{F1 Drivers Standings}} for the upcoming season (i.e. update the race links and clear out the results matrix)

  • Y Add new constructors (chassis makes) to {{F1cstat}}. Optionally, subst transclusions of {{F1cstat}} for constructors who have not competed for the past 2 seasons (and who we don't expect to return), then remove then from the template. Don't forget the transclusions of {{F1cstat}} in {{F1estat}}!
  • Y Update the calculations in {{F1estat}} based on the engine supply arrangements for the new season. Subst transclusions of {{F1estat}} for engine suppliers who will not be competing in the new season. Then add new engine suppliers and remove old engine suppliers from the template. (Note: Honda RBPT, Red Bull Powertrains and Renault have not been substed/removed from the template)
  • Y Update the importance of drivers, constructors, engine manufacturers, circuits and Grands Prix in accordance with the importance scale for the upcoming season.
  • Y Update the parameters in Template:Infobox F1 nationality and Template:Infobox F1 nationality/doc (i.e. on 1 Jan 2026 remove 2025 from Template:Infobox F1 nationality and Template:Infobox F1 nationality/doc)
  • Y Update the "has/have competed in the YYYY season" statements in Y List of Formula One polesitters, Y Pole position#Top ten most Formula One pole positions, Y List of Formula One drivers who set a fastest lap, Y Fastest lap#Top ten drivers in Formula One history with the most fastest laps, Y List of Formula One Grand Prix winners, Y List of Formula One sprint winners, Y List of Formula One Grand Prix winners (constructors), Y List of Formula One drivers, Y Formula One engines, Y Formula One tyres, Y List of Formula One constructor records, Y List of Formula One driver records, Y List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions and Y List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions to say "set/due/contracted to compete in the YYYY+1 season" and update the bolding accordingly. Update the last season of competition for drivers/constructors that won't be competing in the new season.
  • Y Update the "are competing in the Formula One championship in YYYY" statements in all the "<race name> Grand Prix" articles (e.g. Australian Grand Prix, Bahrain Grand Prix, etc) to say "are competing in the Formula One championship in YYYY+1" and update the bolding accordingly.

• Once the driver lineup for the new season has been finalised:
  • Y Update the "Formula One drivers from <country>" articles. For countries with no drivers the relevant year parameter should read "None".
  • Y Hardcode the "Last race" infobox field for drivers who won't be returning for the new season. Hardcode the "Last entry" infobox field for countries with no returning drivers.
  • Y Subst transclusions of {{F1stat}} for drivers who have not competed for two complete seasons, or who have announced their retirement from F1 and add drivers who will be competing but are not currently in the template. Once all transclusions for those drivers have been substed, remove those drivers from the template (and template documentation). Articles where transclusion needs to be done is:
    • Y List of Formula One drivers
    • Y List of Formula One Grand Prix winners
    • Y List of Formula One polesitters
    • Y List of Formula One drivers who set a fastest lap
    • Y List of Formula One points systems
    • Y The articles on the drivers, including any "List of Formula One Grand Prix wins/pole positions by <driver>" articles.
    • Y Articles in the Formula One drivers by country series (on the all time sections when present and the infoboxes)
  • N Subst transclusions of {{F1cstat}} for constructors who have announced their retirement from F1 and add constructors who will be competing but are not currently in the template. Once all transclusions for those constructors have been substed, remove those constructors from the template (and template documentation).
  • N Subst transclusions of {{F1estat}} for engine manufacturers who have announced their retirement from F1 and add engines who will be competing but are not currently in the template. Once all transclusions for those engine manufacturers have been substed, remove those engines from the template (and template documentation). THIS TEMPLATE USES {{F1cstat}}. These need to be substed first.

• Just before the first race of the new season:
  • Y Update Formula One#Grands Prix for the new season
  • Y Add "new season" rows to the team "Formula One results" and "Racing record" tables (don't forget AMR GP)
  • Y Add "new season" rows to the engine supplier "Formula One results" tables
  • Y Add "new season" rows to the driver "Formula One results" tables
  • Y Add "new season" rows to the driver "Career summary" tables
  • Y Subst transclusions of {{F1stat}} in the "old season" row of the driver "Career summary" tables (in theory this can be done any time after the final race of the old season, but it probably makes sense to do it when the "new season" row is added to the table, so that whoever does it can copy the "old season" row to create the "new season" row, before substing the "old season" row)
  • Y Confirm or update the automated calculations using {{F1cstat}} in Team Enstone, Tyrrell Racing#Legacy and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains#Formula One engine results

• Just after the first race of the new season:
  • Y Update the "set/due/contracted to compete in the YYYY season" statements in List of Formula One polesitters, Pole position#Top ten most Formula One pole positions, List of Formula One drivers who set a fastest lap, Fastest lap#Top ten drivers in Formula One history with the most fastest laps, List of Formula One Grand Prix winners, List of Formula One sprint winners, List of Formula One Grand Prix winners (constructors), List of Formula One drivers, Formula One engines, Formula One tyres, List of Formula One constructor records, List of Formula One driver records, List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions and List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions to say "has/have competed in the YYYY season". Update the last season of competition for drivers/constructors that are competing in the new season.

"As of" statements

Numerous F1-related articles contain statements of the form "As of <date> ..." or "To date ..." The end of the season seems like a good time to review these statements and update them if necessary.

• 1953 Formula One season: "It would be his [Alberto Ascari's] last title, as well as the last for any Italian driver, as of 2025."
• 1955 Formula One season: "As of 2026, with just seven rounds completed during the season, the 1955 World Championship Grand Prix season jointly holds the record (along with the inaugural World Championship of Drivers season in 1950) for the fewest World Championship races held in a year for Grand Prix cars in the history of what is today referred to as the Formula One World Championship. "
• 1957 Formula One season: "As of 2025 this was the last World Championship title for Pirelli against competition."
• 1959 German Grand Prix: "As of 2025 this is only official German Grand Prix in World Championship history not to be held at either the Nürburgring or Hockenheimring as a venue."
• 1965 British Grand Prix: "As of 2025, this was the last British Grand Prix to have an all British podium."
• 1965 Monaco Grand Prix: "As of 2025, this race marked the second and most recent time a driver has crashed into the harbour ..."
• 1966 Formula One season:
  • "He [Jack Brabham] became the first and, so far, only driver to win the championship in a car carrying his own name."
  • "As of 2026, 1966 is the only time the World Championship has been won by a driver in a car of his own construction and bearing his own name."
• 1967 Formula One season: "As of 2025, this is the only championship for a New Zealand driver."
• 1967 French Grand Prix: "...as of 2025 is the only time the Bugatti Circuit has been used for the Grand Prix."
• 1969 Canadian Grand Prix: "By finishing sixth, Johnny Servoz-Gavin became the first and only driver in Formula One history to score points in a four-wheel drive car, as of 2026."
• 1970 Italian Grand Prix: "As of 2026, this was also the last time all three podium finishers used different tyre brands; Regazzoni used Firestones, Stewart Dunlops and Beltoise Goodyears."
• 1972 Spanish Grand Prix: "As of 2026, this is the latest Formula 1 race to have been held on a Monday."
• 1973 Canadian Grand Prix: "As of the conclusion of the 2025 Formula One World Championship, this is the last Grand Prix to be won by an American-born driver."
• 1974 Argentine Grand Prix: "This race was also the 8th and last victory of Hulme's Formula One career, and as of 2025, the last for a New Zealand driver."
• 1974 Austrian Grand Prix: "As of 2025, Hulme's podium remains the last achieved by a New Zealand driver in Formula One."
• 1975 Spanish Grand Prix: "Lella Lombardi became the first and, as of 2026, only woman to score points in the World Championship."
• 1976 Austrian Grand Prix: "As of 2025, this remains the last World Championship race that Ferrari did not enter and the last time an American constructor won a F1 race."
• 1976 Formula One season: "As of 2025, this [the Austrian Grand Prix] remains the last World Championship race that Ferrari did not enter and the last time an American-licensed constructor won a F1 race."
