Portal:Macaronesia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

10-year-old abandoned draft portal on the Macaronesia collection of archipelagos: Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde ... which looks to me like it is effectively a narrow topic.

It's an odd collection for a portal. Macaronesia is not a political grouping, and never has been. Unlike the Pacific Micronesia, these 4 archipelagoes are each closer to either Europe or to Africa than to each other, and the collective grouping seems to be notable mostly as a distinct biogeographical region.

So it's not surprising that the head article Macaronesia languishes as a star-class article, with a median of only 279 pageviews per day in Jan–Feb 2019, compared with an average of 2,410 views/day for Madeira and 4,050 per day for the Canary Islands.

Unsurprisingly, the portal for this unloved topic got an average of only 1 pageview per day in Jan–Feb 2019. That's only 1/12th of the median 12 views per day for all portals, and barely above the background noise of hits generated by editors, webcrawlers and bots.

I suppose that it would be possible to argue that this is a broad topic, which could cover everything related to the 4 archipelagos. But that seems a bit dodgy to me, because it would be grouping the politics, culture, people, buildings etc of a biogeographical region. "Politics by ecozone" , "Culture by ecozone" etc seems to me to be a misconstrued set of groupings ... and the alternative of restricting this simply to the "Biogeography of Macaronesia" would indeed by a narrow topic.

In any case, this is is just an abandoned draft. It was created in April 2009‎ by Wiki User 68 (talk · contribs), who hasn't edited since 2010. The portal page itself has been edited since then only for formatting tweaks by the editors who routinely update portal formatting, without and changes to the content.

The subpages listed at Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Macaronesia are similarly abandoned: one Selected article, one Selected picture, one Selected panorama, and intro page ... all barely tweaked since their creation in 2009. With no list of topics and no choice of selected articles or even images, this isn't a portal; it's just a small one-page leaflet.

So I propose that this portal and its sub-pages be deleted, with prejudice against re-creation. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:28, 8 May 2019 (UTC)reply
