It is not a Wikipedia policy or guideline; rather, its purpose is to explain certain aspects of Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Organizing disambiguation pages by subject area It may reflect varying levels of consensus.

Shortcuts

Long disambiguation pages are best organized by subject.

To quickly get readers where they want, in addition to writing good entries:

DO:
Use clearly defined subject headings
Imitate similar pages
Use subsections as needed
Usually keep (sub)sections to 3-12 entries
Put unsorted entries below in "Other uses"

DON'T:
Don't combine unrelated subject headings
Don't use subjects that overlap, if possible
Don't use bold or semicolons for headings
Don't leave unsorted entries floating^[a]
Don't list fictional and real items together
