GLAM Boot Camp 2016 will be held at the National Archives in Washington D.C. on June 14–16, 2016. GLAM Boot Camp is a 3-day training workshop for Wikipedians interested in gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with GLAM-Wiki projects. It is being organized jointly by Wikimedia DC and the National Archives, with funding provided by the National Archives Foundation. The first GLAM Boot Camp was held in April 2013.
Attendees of the 2016 Glam Boot Camp
Sessions will be led by Wikipedians experienced in working with cultural institutions on past partnerships. The purpose of GLAM Boot Camp is to enlarge the pool of Wikipedians working on GLAM projects by bringing into the fold Wikipedians who were interested but not yet involved. Travel expenses are covered for all attendees to allow for greater participation from Wikimedians all around the United States (or possibly North America)!
If you are interested in attending, please fill out our interest form. Please submit your application by Sunday, May 15.

GLAM-Wiki (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) is an effort by members of the Wikimedia community to bring the resources of cultural institutions to Wikimedia. We seek to improve the content of Wikipedia and its sister projects through direct outreach to cultural institutions in order to encourage them to contribute content and expertise. This could be making a first contact with an institution, helping with an image/media upload, or helping to coordinate an event. However, GLAM-Wiki is also a project that takes place on-wiki involving Wikimedians in working in various ways with the contributions of cultural institutions. That might mean writing new Wikipedia content, organizing article collaborations on Wikipedia, categorizing Commons images, transcribing pages on Wikisource, and so on.
The main difference between GLAM-Wiki and other WikiProjects is that it seeks not just to meet the needs of Wikipedia, but to meet the needs of Wikipedia while also sustaining a mutually beneficial relationship with the contributing cultural institution. That does not mean that it is about promoting any particular institution through Wikipedia, and the more experienced community members we can get involved in GLAM-Wiki through projects like this, the less likely that is to happen.
The idea for GLAM Boot Camp was one of the outcomes of GLAMcamp London, where it was discussed that there was no model for an event devoted to helping established Wikipedians become GLAM-savvy Wikipedians. A shortage of manpower is one of the issues facing the GLAM-Wiki initiative, and this event is intended to address it.
If you are an experienced Wikipedian interested in the GLAM-Wiki concept but have not gotten involved before, this is for you. GLAM Boot Camp will introduce you to the basic concepts, whether you'd like to assist our projects on-wiki or go out and help start a new partnership with a cultural institution. It is intended primarily for absolute GLAM beginners. We will focus both on offline outreach techniques as well as online project coordination. We would like to have attendees from many different corners of Wikimedia, including those with WikiProject experience, featured or good article writers, bot coders, Wikisourcerors and Commonists, or with other niches.

Day 1 focuses on the question: What is GLAM-Wiki? How do we think about the GLAM environment? And what are the main tools that the Wikimedia Community has been using to interact with GLAMs?

Developing Models for GLAM: Case studies and Frameworks
Morning refreshments, logistics, and getting to know each other. What are we here for?
Museums and Galleries, Libraries, and Archives are three distinct but interrelated types of organizations. Each is managed by professionals who bring distinct goals, concerns, and educational backgrounds with them. In this session, led by a GLAM veteran who has worked in all three, we’ll drill down on the similarities and differences within each type of GLAM, with a focus on how their respective professional missions align (or diverge) from the goals the Wikimedia movement.
You came with questions, what are they? Do we cover them? What seem to be the themes or challenges you want to review?
A brief introduction to GLAM-Wiki, including what it is and where it is going. This will include an overview of its development, model partnerships (British Museum, Children's Museum, Smithsonian, and National Archive), and how the GLAM-Wiki community works: on-wiki, on mailing lists, and internationally. Following the initial introduction of the main communication tools/venues, we will look at the typical development cycle of a partnership.
A brief introduction to highlights from global GLAM-Wiki activity in the last several years. Slides can be found on Google Drive .
A brief introduction to copyright in Wikimedia projects, especially as they apply to Wikimedia projects.
A practical introduction to Wikidata, its importance for the GLAM-Wiki sector, and the emerging tools being used to engage it within GLAM-Wiki Projects.

What kinds of events can we run? What logistics do you need to be mindful of? How do we partner with organizations that to run those events?
How do you keep the community informed and engaged in your project? What happens when a community member trolls your partnership? How do you proactively keep that from becoming "work" or "crisis control"?

Description
Each of you comes to this boot camp with a potential partner identified for, and the hope of running an event within the couple months following the Bootcamp. Having learned all the basics of GLAM-Wiki, this is your chance to discuss what you would like to accomplish with this skills and knowledge, and what kinds of opportunities you see, and talk baout what new ideas you have.
The Wikimedia community has developed a number of ways to organize volunteers, to engage them directly in filling topic gaps, providing them research materials, and other kinds of support.
It's an editathon! Woot!

Understanding how to apply for grants for events, travel, conferences, or other expenses will ensure you are as successful in whatever activities you might like to participate in or organize in the future.
