Wikipedia:Don't let disabilities deter you
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article or a Wikipedia policy, as it has not been reviewed by the community. |
| This page in a nutshell: Don't let your disabilities deter you from editing Wikipedia. Everybody is unique and welcomed. However, they aren't an excuse to break the rules. |
There are many, many, many, many people who edit Wikipedia. Of all those people, there are many who have physical and/or mental disabilities, and yet they are still able to contribute constructively to Wikipedia. All of these people are behind the scenes, creating the encyclopedia you know and love. In fact, the person who is writing this essay right now has Autism, ADHD, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. No matter what disabilities you have, you will be accepted by this community with open arms and treated like an equal. Don't worry! You have nothing to fear, and if you're ever harassed, there will always be people on your side. That being said...
You still need to follow the rules
[edit]Disabilities are not something to be used to gain sympathy points, and they are not an excuse to break the rules in any way. Disabilities are not exceptions, and you must still follow every one of Wikipedia's Policies and Guidelines. If you let people know about your disability, there may be people who are able to help guide you and teach you. Utilize the WP:MENTOR that you were given (you'll see it on your home page) to get advice. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
Harassment
[edit]If you are being harassed, it is highly recommended to reach out to others. Please see WP:DWH if you are being harassed about your disability(ies) or anything else, seek assistance immediately, especially if personal information is involved.
