CSO Viitorul Liteni is a Romanian association football club based in Liteni, Suceava County. The club was established in 2005 as Viitorul Liteni and later adopted the name CSO Viitorul Liteni. It has competed in both the Liga III and Liga IV levels of the Romanian football league system.[1]

History

Early years

Viitorul Liteni was established in 2004 as a football club representing the town of Liteni. The club competed in the national third tier during the 2005–06 season. Contemporary coverage in the local press placed Viitorul Liteni in Divizia C's Series I, where it finished the season in seventh place with 38 points from 26 matches.[2]

The club also participated in the Cupa României during the 2006–07 season. In August 2006, Viitorul Liteni was eliminated by CSM Bucovina Rădăuți in the third round of the competition after a 10–0 defeat.[3]

Return to the county leagues

After its period in the national third tier, the club subsequently competed in the Suceava county competitions. The Asociația Județeană de Fotbal Suceava (English: Suceava County Football Association) records Viitorul Liteni among the teams participating in the county Liga IV competitions.[4]

In 2018, Viitorul Liteni won the Railex Cup, a county-level Romanian Cup competition, defeating the representative from Fălticeni in the final.[5]

2020–21 season

Viitorul Liteni won the Liga IV Suceava championship in 2021 after defeating LPS Suceava 1–0 in the county championship final. Mihai Gheorghiță scored the only goal of the match. The victory qualified Viitorul Liteni for the promotion play-off to Liga III.[6]

The club subsequently lost both legs of its promotion play-off against AFC Odorheiu Secuiesc, 0–2 and 1–2, and therefore remained in the county competition.[7]

2022–23 season

Viitorul Liteni again won the Suceava county championship in 2023 and entered the promotion play-off for Liga III. In the first leg against Unirea Curtești, played on 17 June 2023, Viitorul Liteni won 4–2 away from home.[8]

In the return match, Viitorul Liteni lost 2–3 but won the tie 6–5 on aggregate and obtained promotion to Liga III for the 2023–24 season.[9]

Despite winning promotion, the club subsequently informed the Romanian Football Federation that it could not participate in Liga III and chose to continue at county level.[10]

Stadium

CSO Viitorul Liteni plays its home matches at the Ion Pintilescu Stadium in Liteni. The municipal development strategy identifies the Ion Pintilescu sports ground as one of the town's main football facilities.[11]
