Vasconia Sporting Club (also known as Vasconia SC) was a sports club from San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Spain. The club is chiefly known for providing the name and registration under which the Real Sociedad team competed in the 1910 Copa UCEF.[1]
History
[edit]Vasconia Sporting Club was one of several early sports clubs in San Sebastián during the development of association football in the city. The club existed alongside other early football organisations, including San Sebastián Recreation Club and Esperanza.[1]
The club became particularly significant in 1910 because the recently established Sociedad de Foot-Ball could not yet compete under its own name. Sociedad de Foot-Ball had been officially established on 7 September 1909, but the regulations of the Spanish championship required a club to have the necessary period of legal existence before participating.[1]
Vasconia therefore provided its name and registration for the Sociedad de Foot-Ball team in the 1910 Copa UCEF. The team first defeated Racing Club de Irún in the qualifying stage and then entered the three-team final tournament at Ondarreta Stadium, alongside Athletic Bilbao and Madrid FC.[1][2]
Vasconia defeated Madrid FC 2–0 on 21 March 1910, but had previously lost 1–0 to Athletic Bilbao on 20 March. Athletic therefore won the tournament, while Vasconia finished as runners-up.[2]
The Vasconia name was used as a legal umbrella for the Sociedad de Foot-Ball team rather than representing a separate sporting side in the tournament. The official history of Real Sociedad states that the club's players competed under the name Vasconia Sporting Club because Sociedad de Foot-Ball did not yet meet the registration requirement.[1]
Relationship with Real Sociedad
[edit]Vasconia Sporting Club should be distinguished from the institutional history of Real Sociedad. The players who competed as Vasconia in 1910 were those of Sociedad de Foot-Ball, the club that had been officially founded in 1909 and received the title of Real from Alfonso XIII on 11 February 1910.[1]
The connection is also reflected in Real Sociedad's official historical record, which treats the 1910 runners-up finish under the Vasconia name as an achievement of the San Sebastián club.[1]
The earlier 1909 Spanish championship was won by the same football group under the name Club Ciclista. That title was won before Sociedad de Foot-Ball was officially established on 7 September 1909. The players subsequently left Club Ciclista and formally established Sociedad de Foot-Ball, which became Real Sociedad in 1910.[1]
Thus, the 1909 championship was won under the Club Ciclista name, while the 1910 runners-up finish was achieved under the Vasconia Sporting Club name, both during the formative period of the institution that became Real Sociedad.[1][3]
