Tveit is a former municipality in the old Vest-Agder county, Norway. The 107.3-square-kilometre (41.4 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1965. The area is now part of Kristiansand Municipality in Agder county. The administrative centre was the village of Tveit where Tveit Church is located.[6]

Prior to its dissolution in 1965, the 107.3-square-kilometre (41.4 sq mi) municipality was the 413th largest by area out of the 525 municipalities in Norway. Tveit Municipality was the 324th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 2,725. The municipality's population density was 25.4 inhabitants per square kilometre (66/sq mi) and its population had increased by 35.6% over the previous 10-year period.[7][8]

General information

The parish of Tveit was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law).[9]

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee.[10][11] On 1 January 1965, Tveit Municipality was dissolved and the following areas were merged to form an enlarged Kristiansand Municipality:[9]

Name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Tveit farm (Old Norse: Þveit) since the first Tveit Church was built there. The name is identical to the word þveit which means "a piece of cleared land cut from a forest".[12] Historically, the spelling of the name has varied including Tved, Thvet, and Tveid.[13]

The Church of Norway had one parish (sokn) within Tveit Municipality. At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Tveit prestegjeld and the Kristiansand domprosti (arch-deanery) in the Diocese of Agder.[8]

Geography

The municipality was located along the Topdalselva river. The highest point in the municipality was the 277.6-metre (911 ft) tall mountain Slettehei, located along the northern border with Vennesla Municipality.[1] Birkenes Municipality was located to the north, Høvåg Municipality was located to the east, Randesund Municipality was located to the south, Oddernes Municipality was located to the southwest, and Vennesla Municipality was located to the northwest.

Government

While it existed, Tveit Municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, welfare and other social services, zoning, economic development, and municipal roads and utilities. The municipality was governed by a municipal council of directly elected representatives. The mayor was indirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council.[14] The municipality was under the jurisdiction of the Torridal District Court and the Agder Court of Appeal.
