Tethi Bari, also written Tethibari, is a village in the Bhagabanpur I community development block of the Egra subdivision in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, India. It is situated in a predominantly rural part of the district, inland from the coastal belt of the Bay of Bengal. The village is identified by the 2011 Census of India village code 345519.[1]

Tethi Bari is principally associated with Bajkul Milani Mahavidyalaya, a government-sponsored college established in the village in 1964. The institution serves students from Tethi Bari, Bajkul and other rural settlements in Purba Medinipur district.[2]

Tethi Bari is located at 22°02′14″N 87°48′27″E / 22.0373°N 87.8075°E / 22.0373; 87.8075. The village covers an area of approximately 1.9245 km2 (475.6 acres).[1]

Urbanisation

According to the District Statistical Handbook 2014: Purba Medinipur, 96.96 per cent of the population of Egra subdivision lived in rural areas, while 3.04 per cent lived in urban areas. Egra had the lowest proportion of urban residents among the subdivisions of Purba Medinipur district.[3]

History

Published information about the early history of Tethi Bari is limited. The village historically formed part of the former Midnapore district. On 1 January 2002, Midnapore district was divided into Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur, after which Tethi Bari became part of Purba Medinipur.[4]

An important development in the modern history of the village was the establishment of Bajkul Milani Mahavidyalaya. The college was founded on 3 September 1964 as a government-sponsored institution affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It became affiliated with Vidyasagar University in 1985.[2]

Tethi Bari remains a separately recognised administrative village. The Government of India's Jal Jeevan Mission database identifies it by Local Government Directory code 345519 and Jal Jeevan Mission village identification number 515072.[5]

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, Tethi Bari had a population of 2,420, of whom 1,259 (52 per cent) were male and 1,161 (48 per cent) were female. The village contained 537 households. There were 268 children below six years of age.[1]

A total of 2,022 residents were recorded as literate. The effective literacy rate, calculated for the population aged six years and above, was 93.96 per cent. The village had approximately 922 females for every 1,000 males.[1]

Transport

Deshapran railway station, located near Bajkul, is on the Tamluk–Digha branch line. The railway line connecting Tamluk with Contai and Digha was developed in stages during the early 2000s.[6] Local roads connect Tethi Bari with Kismat Bajkul, Kajlagarh, Bhagabanpur and other settlements in the Egra subdivision.

Education

Bajkul Milani Mahavidyalaya is situated at Tethibari mouza and uses a Kismat Bajkul postal address. Established in 1964, it is a government-sponsored college affiliated with Vidyasagar University.[7]

The college offers undergraduate courses in arts and science subjects, together with postgraduate programmes. Its official website describes nineteen undergraduate major disciplines and five regular postgraduate courses.[7] Vidyasagar University has also listed the institution as a distance-education study centre at Kismat Bajkul.[8] The college serves students from Tethi Bari and other rural communities in Purba Medinipur district.
