Template talk:Update

"those related to section"

If you visit Template:Update/testcases and search for "those related to section", you'll see some templates that are using bad grammar. I suggest changing that to "those related to this section", or removing that entirely. Would do it myself but is a bit complicated because the same code is also used to generate "those related to documentation", which is correct grammar and doesn't necessarily need to be modified. This annoying bug has been allowed to live for three years apparently, User:Novem Linguae. Can somebody stop the madness, so |section= is NEVER interpreted as anything else than the obvious usage? It should be impossible for {{Template|Section}} to ever be interpreted as anything else than "This article/template/whatever" --> "This section" CapnZapp (talk) 11:39, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

"part" parameter is broken outside of mainspace

I'm trying to use the template at Help:Section § Table of contents (TOC) and the template says:

Parts of this help page (those related to section) need to be updated.

instead of

This section needs to be updated.

as it says in mainspace.

For reference, the usage says:

To use the template in one specific section, and change its wording to refer to the section instead of the page, use |section and insert the template at the top of the section: {{Update|section|date=August 2025}}

Sure, seems like a good idea. Though when searching randomly, I found many uses of the template that don't supply reasons. I did manage to find some examples which seem to work fine now: Honduras, Norway#Sports (insource:/Update.{1,30}reason=/ hastemplate:Update).  Done. --Nux (talk) 07:58, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

Inappropriate uses of update.

An editor has been using this template to put TODO notes like

into articles. In my opinion belongs in the Talk page, not as graffiti in the article. Am I wrong? Johnjbarton (talk) 15:55, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

Why is it inappropriate? Template:Update#Usage shows that when |section is used, you should insert the template at the top of the section; by extension, if it applies to the whole article, it goes at the top of the article. In my opinion an encyclopedia article should be cater to readers, not to editors who are unwilling or unable to add coherent content. We have Talk pages for incoherence already. The update banner is visually loud, far beyond the much more important notice like Template:Citation needed. Moreover, External links normally should not be placed in the body of an article. Here have a very loud banner with an external link: it should not be used. Johnjbarton (talk) 16:40, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

There are lots of maintenance banners intended for use in articles, such as {{refimprove}} and {{BLP self-published}}; {{update}} is not the only one. If the use of an external link is your issue, then it's the EL that's misplaced, not the {{update}}; the |reason= parameter is intended for text like |reason=Is missing the March 2026 election results. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:03, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

"those related to section" (2)

Why has somebody gone to great lengths making it difficult to simply say {{Out of date|section}} and have the text say "This section is out of date..." anywhere instead of having to bend over backwards to avoid the super annoying misinterpretation of "section" to mean |reason=section???

What could drive somebody to spend energy making it impossible to use section in other namespaces than main article?

The functionality seems to have an off/on history. I made this edit as requested at Template talk:Update/Archive 1#Edit request on 15 January 2013 and it was certainly working at the time. Looking at the dates in that thread, the only subsequent edit that could have broken it is the very next one by MSGJ (talk · contribs). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:22, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
