Duplicate template

What really is the point of this template? Another template ({{!(}}/{{!((}}) already provides the same usage, but with a much shorter name, so would it not make more sense to merge the templates, using a redirect, or simply replace usages of one with the other?

This topic also applies to {{square bracket close}} and its duplication with {{)!}} and {{))!}}

Does anyone know how to make this work? I'm trying to adding square brackets to:

According to X, "Few darker portraits of Eddy [{{Square bracket open|2}}Mary Baker Eddy{{Square bracket close|2}}, founder of Christian Science] have emerged since the days when [[Mark Twain]] called her ''a brass god with clay legs''.
