Short Description Needed

This template doesn't give context as to use and user. Even one sentence would be better than as is. How about:

“Personal attacks should never be used in Wikipedia. This template allows an editor to remove personal attacks without removing context or completely deleting a comment.”

Anything is more helpful than nothing. Well not anything, but those two sentences are better than nothing. Beam 04:27, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

possible revision and expansion of the template

an idea: it would be easy enough to revise this template so that it uses a span block to hide the material rather than simply replacing the material, and that might make the template useful for more than simple personal attacks. the code would be:

<span><small>(comment refactored)</small></span><span style="display: none">{{{1|}}}</span>

and would in practice look like this:

 Completed – just fyi this was not actually a "short description"; it is found in the "Page information" and is called a "Central description". Central descriptions are generated by Wikidata, so you could have edited it yourself. For the future, click on "Wikidata item", usually in the left margin, then alter the "Description" on that page. Can someone please add a parameter that can optionally specify which editor the attack was made against? E.g. "Personal attack against Gommeh (talk · contribs) removed". This is so that if Editor A attacks Editor B, and Editor B doesn't see it, Editor C can go in and remove it and specify who was attacked if they feel it necessary. Gommeh 🎮 04:24, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

The main purpose of removing the attack is to reduce drama. This would seem to provoke further angst. If Editor B doesn't see it, then GOOD! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:41, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

I agree that it's important to avoid unnecessary drama. But having said that I still think there's value in allowing an optional parameter to specify the target of a personal attack that's been removed in some cases. I propose that if added, the parameter should only be used under strict guidelines, for example: only when the target would not be obvious from context once the offending post is removed, and where noting who the target is helps in understanding the edit or addressing a broader pattern of behavior (e.g. harassment).

My goal would be to only use it when omitting the information would leave others confused. I have no intention for this to provoke anyone or add fuel to the fire. Gommeh 🎮 15:55, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
