Add topicMissing information about the day of the month (1st or last)
[edit source]@Denny, Erik Zachte, Meno25, and Dcljr: and all others: It is written: "New articles, growth, rank and diff are measured against a full calendar year or month". (For me) it is not so clear if the numbers (for example for May 2004) are collected on 1st May 2004 or on 31th May 2004. Can you help with this missing information. In comparision in the year stats (for example 2004 monthly stats) the 1st of each month is mentioned in the table header. Thx and Best Regards! --W like wiki good to know 15:50, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
PS.: @Erik Zachte: I appreacated very much your stats.wikimedia.org!! It is a pitty that it is offline! The last days I was also working on the List of Wikipedias, meta:List of Wikipedias and de:Wikipedia:Sprachen#Chronologie der Wikipedias nach Artikelanzahl. When historical datas was needed I refer to your page but there is only a screenshot in the archive! Do you know if there is any backup with copyable text!? If yes, we can link to that page. PS2.: It seems to be the 1st day of each month. I compared the data with the revision history of Meta:List of Wikipedias/Table and added according comments above the tables on:

PS3.: In the beginning of the statistics like for Wikipedia:Multilingual ranking/January 2001 it sems to be the last day of the month and not the 1st day because the English Wikipedia for example only exists since 15th January 2001. In the year stats Wikipedia:Multilingual statistics/2001 on the other side it is clearly marked and en-wiki figures are starting with 1st February 2001.
Later in Wikipedia:Multilingual ranking/March 2002 (en-wiki: 27,000 articles) in seems to be the 1st of March when in the year stats 2002 en-wiki had 27,000 articles the 1st March. At latest in November 2002 (en-wiki 91,000 articles) it is the 1st Nov. when in the year stats 2002 en-wiki had 90,000 articles on 1st Nov.
PS4.: In general the numbers in month and year stats are not corresponding and obviously are using different counting methods. Try to match the numbers of e.g. German Wikipedia in November 2002 (6229 articles) with the year stats 2002 (1st Sep: 5300, 1st Oct: 6700 articles, 1st Nov: 7500 articles). --W like wiki good to know 06:12, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
@W like wiki, Denny, Meno25, and Dcljr: Thanks for asking, and sorry for late reply. The figures are for full months, so months were only added after completion. The data in the web archive are not screen copies but the actual html tables. Scripts collected the data and produced html on the fly in about 27 languages, with a.o. different rules for numbers representations per language. There was no master set of numbers in e.g. csv or json format. So data from internet archive are as good as it gets, but can be copied into a spreadsheet, with some postprocessing needed: numbers are rounded, focus was on readability. 449k could be anything from 448500 to 449499. If I would have started all over I definitely would have built a multi step process with intermediate language independent data files. But hey I was a one-person team on a part-time contract. So total overhaul was out of the question.
I contacted the WMF Analytics Team recently and asked if data could be restored. The internet archive is a great fallback, but only one external repository for these data makes our history vulnerable. This is ongoing. Erik Zachte (talk) 12:27, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
