Singleton and null sets

I'm having trouble marking up null and singleton sets. I expect

{{tmath|x {{=}} x \cup {{mset|x}}, y {{=}} {{mset}} }}

to render as x = x ⁠$\cup$⁠ { x }, y = {}, but instead it renders as

⁠$x=x\cup {x},y={}$⁠
