Wrong secondary stress

Voiced postalveolar affricate d͡ʒ

Why is voiced postalveolar affricate d͡ʒ being displayed as dʒ when {{IPAc-ar}} is called with j/dʒ/d͡ʒ etc. as the parameter? d͡ʒ is the IPA standard, since the IPA deprecated ʤ. waddie96 ★ (talk) 21:21, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

For clarity, it's the ʤ ligature that's deprecated (IPA handbook appendix 2). Transcribing that affricate as a d followed by a ʒ is fine, and that's what {{C-ar}} did; current IPA charts say tie bars can be used to represent affricates "if necessary". Erinius (talk) 22:47, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

I was being WP:BOLD with the change, but I am unaware of what is common practice. What is more common: dʒ or d͡ʒ? On Wiktionary to me it seemed the latter hence I changed it. I'm not sure which is more common for transcribing Arabic on here - I don't think the tie bar would be necessary, since I'm fairly sure MSA doesn't contrast dʒ with ʒ so there's no risk of confusion. Also, this template creates links to Help:IPA/Arabic and the key there has dʒ. Erinius (talk) 00:59, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

Yes, the tie bar tends to be dropped when not needed. It's rather distracting when reading IPA. We don't use it for English or Spanish. — kwami (talk) 02:38, 14 February 2025 (UTC)

Noted. Reverted my change at Template:C-ar. Consensus appears to be to display dʒ. Hence {{IPAc-ar|d͡ʒ}} will display as dʒ. waddie96 ★ (talk) 10:48, 17 February 2025 (UTC)
