I'm using it in Irish phonology#References to create two columns of references written in small type. It's usual for references to be written smaller than main text, and putting them in two columns prevents the lines of text from being too long, as well as saving vertical space. —Angr18:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Since this template is effectively just syntactic sugar for {{col-begin|small=y|...}}, could someone please remove the explicit defaults for |bgColor= and |width=? Maybe these defaults were useful for something back in 2016, but right now passing transparent in particular all but disappears standard text in dark mode and working around this with empty |bgColor= doesn't seem very productive; whereas 100% width is the default anyway. TBH I think the template should just be replaced with {{col-begin|small=y|...}} (there appear to be only 8 cases actually using |width=, and none with |bgColor= or |class=), but I'm not sure I should muddy the ongoing TfD for this family.
