Note that this template is not used on the Main Page, which transcludes pages like Template:POTD protected/2026-08-05, where {{POTD row}} has been substituted. Neil Armstrong (August 5, 1930 – August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut who was the commander of NASA's Apollo 11 mission and the first person to walk on the Moon, in July 1969. He spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft on the lunar surface, along with Lunar Module pilot Buzz Aldrin. Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1962 after participating in the United States Air Force's Man in Space Soonest and X-20 Dyna-Soar human spaceflight programs. Apollo 11 was his second and final spaceflight, his first being the Gemini 8, an Earth orbital mission, in 1966.
