| This template should never be substituted – use {{Not a chatbot}}. |
Usage
[edit]Place this template at the top of the talk page for articles about AI chatbots, conversational agents, or virtual assistants (such as ChatGPT or Claude (AI)) where readers frequently mistake the Wikipedia talk page for the actual software interface.
The template detects the name of the subject page and removes any parenthetical disambiguation from it. If no link is given, it also fetches the chatbot's official website from Wikidata (property P856) to use for the button.
On protected talk pages
[edit]The output depends on whether the page carrying the template is edit protected, at any level:
- If the page is not protected, the template displays its own message box: an {{Mbox}}, or an {{Editnotice}} when
editnotice=yes. - If the page is protected, the template discards its own message and becomes a wrapper around {{Talk page semi-protected indefinitely}}, using {{#invoke:Template wrapper|wrap}}. The protection notice and the explanation that this is not the chatbot then appear together in a single box, with the wrapped template's own icon and buttons in place of the robot icon and the talk button.
When wrapping, only parameters that have a value are passed on, and empty parameters are dropped. They are passed as follows:
urlis passed asai. If no URL is given, the Wikidata URL is used instead, and if there is none either,ai=yesis passed so that the notice appears without a chat button.name,generic,editnotice,note, anddemoprotectionare passed under the same names.
The protection level is read from the page the template is placed on. The demoprotection parameter overrides it, which is mainly useful for demonstrations such as the § Examples below. Any non-empty value (for example autoconfirmed) selects the protected behaviour, while an empty value forces the unprotected one.
Syntax
[edit]Basic usage:
{{Not a chatbot}}
With a manual link to the actual bot (overrides Wikidata):
{{Not a chatbot |url=https://... }}
As an editnotice:
{{Not a chatbot |editnotice=yes }}
With all parameters:
{{Not a chatbot |url= |name= |generic= |editnotice= |note= }}
To preview the protected version on a page that is not protected:
{{Not a chatbot |demoprotection=autoconfirmed }}
Examples
[edit]Talk notice
[edit]{{Not a chatbot|name=Claude|url=https://example.com|note= Additional notes can go here}}
| This is not the place to ask Claude a question. Talk pages are for discussing Wikipedia articles. Comments unrelated to the Wikipedia article about Claude may be removed and will not be responded to. Additional notes can go here |
This is how the template will appear when parameters are provided. The examples that use demoprotection simulate a protected page, so they show the output of {{Talk page semi-protected indefinitely}} instead of this template's own message box.
{{Not a chatbot|name=Claude|url=https://example.com|note= Additional notes can go here.|demoprotection=autoconfirmed}}
| This page is indefinitely semi-protected from editing as it is subject to an unmanageable torrent of edits from people who mistakenly believe this is where they can ask Claude a question. It is not: to chat with Claude, visit example |
Editnotice
[edit]{{Not a chatbot|editnotice=yes|note= Additional notes can go here|generic=yes}}
{{Not a chatbot|editnotice=yes|name=ChatGPT|url=https://example.com|note= Additional notes can go here.|demoprotection=extendedconfirmed}}
