Mamdani's updated statement on grocery stores

[edit source]

The article currently states, "Mamdani also wants the city government to operate five grocery stores."

I think it's worth mentioning that Mamdani has since changed his plan, and he now says, "A private operator will run the store."

This distinction matters.

The article should keep the original statement, and add that updated, exact quote of his own, more recent words.

Sources for him saying, "A private operator will run the store"

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/new-york-city/mamdani-grocery-store-city-owned-locations-la-marqueta-harlem/6489675/

https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/mamdani-city-run-grocery-stores-how-they-will-work/

What do other editors think of making this addition to the article?

Would someone please add the following to the article? Thank you.

In April 2026, Mamdani updated his proposal by saying that, "a private operator will run the store."[1][2]

U87115bgcz (talk) 05:10, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please add it to Political positions of Zohran Mamdani - We do not need to add every single thing Mamdani says to this article. Cinaroot (talk) 08:37, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
This article, as it currently stands, is inaccurate and outdated. That's why I think this new information should be added to this article. U87115bgcz (talk) 03:07, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is the new picture actually better?

[edit source]

@AuroraANovaUma, I think the new picture is actually worse than the last one because of the resolution issue. I recognize that it looks more like an official portrait, of course, but it just seems to me aesthetically worse in the absence of a real, high-quality official portrait. I regret that I can't martial any non-squishy assessment to my side apart from a bare assertion that the relatively low resolution is problematic. LieutenantZipp (talk) 15:54, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The resolution of File:Mamdani and AOC childcare announcement (cropped).png is way too low. Also it's a PNG screenshot of a YouTube video as opposed to a high resolution JPG for a real-life photograph. Yue🌙 (talk) 07:27, 9 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I mostly picked that one because the background contrasted with his hair better and he was still looking at the camera. Zohran has black hair and in the image we have been using for awhile he was standing behind a black background. The contrast is terrible.
The best images I could find were these three images, which also have their downsides:
In neither of these images is Zohran looking directly at the camera. In the second one, the lighting feels artificially good, and in the third one the lighting is bad. The second and third ones are also grainy. The backgrounds all contrast with his hair better, admittedly.
In short, I would really like the infobox image to contrast with his hair better than it does now. Like I said before, he has black hair, so a black background would provide essentially no contrast unless the lighting makes his hair shine like it does in the third one. While the first one is the best image I could find, I also recognize that he is not looking at the camera in that image, and I don't know if that's an issue, which is why I am hesitant to use any of these and would like your input.
So, would any of these be a good idea? Or just stick to the one we've been using for awhile? AuroraANovaUma ^-^ (talk) 00:41, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I absolutely recognize how problematic the current picture is in its severe lack of contract between hair and background. I don't hate 1 and 2 among the ones you suggested (though 1 has a really weird head angle and I don't think represents how he typically looks very well as a result and 2 has a distractingly cluttered background, is visibly candid (what with the open mouth), and has a visible microphone) (3, despite that I think it best matches how Mamdani typically looks, I think is clearly the worst of the four in that not only is its lighting problematic and appearance slightly grainy, it also has a somewhat distracting background, has an open mouth betraying its candidness, and has a visible microphone), but in the absence of consensus my impression is that it would probably be best to be conservative about the issue as a whole and retain the use of the one that's been in use despite the black background. I'm honestly surprised that, with all the images there are of him, there isn't one that's clearly best (or at least excellent). LieutenantZipp (talk) 15:06, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, then I guess we have to wait. Hopefully a good free image of him will come soon. Considering how influential Zohran is, I find it surprising that it doesn't exist. Hopefully Gage Skidmore or some other professional photographer that does freely-licensed photos will get a photo of him one day. Infobox images of black-haired subjects should always have a background that contrasts with their hair, and it's regrettable that a good, freely-licensed image of just that doesn't exist for this guy. AuroraANovaUma ^-^ (talk) 15:29, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I completely agree. Quite strange, really. LieutenantZipp (talk) 14:30, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Out of these photos, I think the second one is the best (the first shows him facing the side too much, and not to mention before his mayoralty, and the third is too grainy and too dark). However, as mentioned, and per Talk:Zohran Mamdani/Archive 6#Picture change - voting, we should wait until a more ‘official’ portrait is released. KagedCroc1 ⭐️ 15:44, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maybe someone should email Mamdani's team for a picture for Wikipedia. Cinaroot (talk) 23:03, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The quality is pretty poor, but since we haven’t had a lead image for him during his mayoralty for so long, I believe this is the best we’ve ever gotten during it. KagedCroc1 ⭐️ 08:54, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Should be an image with him smiling. See "The Interview: Zohran Mamdani Knows He Has Political Capital. And He Intends to Spend It.":
You’re known for smiling a lot, which I can attest to in this interview. And I wonder about the political philosophy behind that. Apart from the personality trait, perhaps you’re just a naturally optimistic soul. Both successful models, but different.
I wish I could say that I adopted this as part of a political project, but I have to credit my parents and my grandparents, because it was something that they encouraged as I was a kid. And I think in both of these instances, what you’re describing is that you are showing something to the world about who you are. Oftentimes it feels like politicians are blank canvases and everyone else is supposed to paint them in. I think it’s time to show people: “This is who I am. Maybe you don’t like it, maybe you do like it, but this is me.”
إيان (talk) 09:18, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
We don't have any other pic. When we have a smiling pic, we can replace it. We just need a decent pic during his mayoralty. Also, smiling isn’t a criterion for pics - it’s just nice to have. Astropulse (talk) 09:21, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
There are plenty of other pictures. This is a BLP, not an article about his mayoralty. The criteria for images is that they illustrate the topic according to RS, and above you have a solid RS characterizing the topic. Your unilateral reinstating of this new image is disappointing. إيان (talk) 09:46, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry about that, I was not aware of there being a talk page discussion on the image.
Revert if need be, but I believed that the image, like what KagedCroc1 has stated, was quite low-quality and somewhat unflattering. Might not be the best reason for reverting though. Blueconcorde (talk) 07:15, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

old one Blueconcorde (talk) 09:39, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Either picture is fine; actually this is the first image in a long time that is at least of similar compositional quality as the current image. There is no requirement that the subject needs to be smiling. Einsof (talk) 18:44, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
He is talking about Netanyahu; that’s why he has his serious face on. From YouTube its difficult to capture a smiling face because he is always talking and moving. Astropulse (talk) 19:07, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I personally think that this is the best free image we have of him currently. The resolution is half-decent and the background not only contrasts with his hair well enough, but isn't super busy. I personally think that matters more than if he is smiling. The main issue I have with the image from 2025 is that the background is black, just like his hair. I think that's a much bigger problem than if he's smiling. AuroraANovaUma ^-^ (talk) 01:15, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
New picture works per AuroraANovaUma's rationale. —Biosketch (talk) 19:21, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

No. Consensus is not achieved through majority vote. Einsof (talk) 15:28, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
For picture selection - it's all about people's preferences or what they like - not based on strength of the argument - so a majority vote will work Astropulse (talk) 15:37, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I’d argue it would be both. For now I don’t think we have reached consensus yet. KagedCroc1 ⭐️ 15:40, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the picture File:Zohran Mamdani Jul 21, 2026.png or its derivative File:Zohran Jul 21, 2026.jpg are nice and official. Why do we need him wide smile in his lead picture? Articles on politicians have their lead picture in a neutral face or light smiling with the mouth shut. E.g. Donald Trump, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi... --Esperfulmo (talk) 00:13, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

We don't need him smiling. One editor prefers it. Astropulse (talk) 05:15, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Neither we need a photograph of him in office. There's no policy obliging us. Yacàwotçã (talk) 05:36, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
But it’s customary to use official portrait or at least official looking for an office holder. As AuroraANovaUma noted, the old one has black background is not a great pic. Astropulse (talk) 06:06, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Astropulse I see someone added this new image. Could we at least have it more centralized? I feel he's more to the right than to the left Yacàwotçã (talk) 22:56, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mamdani on arresting the Prime Minister of Israel

[edit source]

Recently, Zohran Mamdani threatened to have Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of the State of Israel, arrested over alleged war crimes during the Gaza war if he visits NYC. Has this information been added to the article yet? Yehoshua667 (talk) 16:44, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Actually, Mamdani recently said that NYC does not have the legal authority to arrest Netanyahu under the ICC warrant (see his statement here, ~1:26). FactOrOpinion (talk) 16:57, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am aware he said that, but he only made that statement after, where he sought the arrest of Netanyahu under the ICC warrant in a video he posted on his social media. Yehoshua667 (talk) 17:04, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

revert

[edit source]

@إيان regarding your revert , his authority and NYC government authority are the same. He is the major of NYC. The Guardian source clearly states this New York mayor admits he does not have authority to arrest Netanyahu, adding Israeli PM is ‘architect of a horrific genocide’

This section should be brief as possible. Astropulse (talk) 22:31, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean by which removed source balancing NYT, which has been documented as anti-Mamdani I don't have NYT paid subscription. Astropulse (talk) 22:34, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, Mandani was accused of knowing he did not have the authority to arrest Netanyahu last year. And he knows the federal government is not going to arrest Netanyahu. Wikipedia is not a platform for political speech. I don’t support adding his calls for the federal government to arrest Netanyahu. Astropulse (talk) 22:40, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Will someone please add this? Thank you.

In July 2026, Mamdani said that at the beginning of every month, the grocery stores would set the prices for fresh produce, meat, seafood, bread, milk, eggs, and other staples at a 30% discount, and that the prices would remain at that level for the entire month.[1]

Please add it to Political_positions_of_Zohran_Mamdani
Do we need to add every single thing he say's? We already added his announcement of city run grocery. That should be enough. Astropulse (talk) 07:00, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Might also belong in Mayoralty of Zohran Mamdani, but either way, I agree it's too granular (and likely transient) to belong here. Einsof (talk) 14:19, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article currently states, "On April 15, 2026, Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a pied-à-terre tax, taxing second homes valued above $5 million of owners who live outside New York City."

However, the minimum for co-ops and condominiums is actually $1 million, not $5 million.

Hip Hop Career

[edit source]

The line " Various organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch, consider the trial to have been flawed." seems to be entirely misplaced within the section "2015–2019: Hip-hop and rap". Its phrasing certainly does little to justify its relevance within the context of his hip hop career. I would suggest the line's removal. ~2026-42094-24 (talk) 16:09, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Done: I've put that bit of the article back to the version as of revision 1346559943, which lacked that sentence.
