Real or not?

Many of these seem spurious.

In particular, quite a few (such as YATTT, YAUN, YAYACC and YAZ) have had their Wikipedia pages deleted. Are these for real? Earthlyreason (talk) 04:56, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

It was requested that this article be renamed but the procedure outlined at WP:RM#Requesting potentially controversial moves did not appear to be followed, and consensus could not be determined. Examples

Bytekast has introduced a two tier list of examples to this article and reverted my removal of most of it. I'd like to explain the issues with this.

First of all, this is not a list article, nor an attempt to list everything that has ever used this style of naming. These are supposed to be examples, so just how many does the reader need to understand the concept? I'd suggest eight is enough.

Secondly, what is the point in dividing the list into two? It accomplishes nothing. How does this help the reader? Are those in the second list worse examples than the first?

Thirdly, the determination of what should be in which list is entirely a matter of Bytekast's opinion. There is no factual criteria in use here, there is nothing "self evident" and no indication on how it has been determined which are "best known".

Combined, the lists are excessive and the criteria for the examples should be focussed on the breadth of its use, regardless of anyone's opinion of where they rank in notability. Thank you for the indirect Request for Comment. I would like to address your perceived issues.

Interestingly, this unfortunate article has always been lacking in depth, despite being almost as old as the encyclopedia itself (the article was created on July 30, 2001, according to the page-stats headline). No history about it, not much to explain. Perhaps that arises from the meme's very nature, as it's not quite profound, which explains why growth has been (to Wikipedia's standards) minimal, and will likely remain so for the unforeseeable future, considering the article's age.

I for one would argue that the examples are not there for aiding in the reader's understanding of the concept, since the introductory paragraph (the only relevant and explanatory section here, a nameless one) already does that. They are there to demonstrate how the meme is applied in real life, real tools/programs, how it has been used post-yacc.

In no way did I intend for the lists to be a matter of my opinion and to house it solely. Instead, I used my knowledge, or what I know as an IT insider about the items previously listed (scattered) in a single-purpose list. If you look closely, you will see that the "Notable" examples are more famous (not better, but more notable), more popular/used, than the "Other" (not "Worst") ones. That was what I had in mind when splitting the original list. Some examples therein were really special in those regards, as known by many people out there (not just me), always relatively to the rest of the listed byspells (never in a vacuum).

Yacc is notable on its own right: it was the first software to have ever used that naming scheme, as the article itself notes. Yahoo! was a major search engine and is still widely used in Japan; it's not a specialized tool used only by a few technical people. Yandex is its Russian equivalent, also used by millions, very popular there (and that's not my opinion). Within IT, YAML is likewise widely used as a markup language, e.g. for project specification in major languages (like Python); it's not niche or obscure or "esoteric". YAPC and YAS are related to Perl, a most renowned scripting language in the *NIX scene and the originator of the wonderful PCRE. The only possibly questionable or controversial items of the Notables list, by virtue of not being as notable as the aforementioned ones, are the two Linux ones: Yakuake and YaST. I only included them there and didn't other them because the former is a part of the Plasma desktop, the second-most used Linux DE after GNOME, and YaST is a core and critical tool of openSUSE, a relatively well-known distro. Despite Linux not being as widely used (desktopwise only) as Windows and macOS, we should remember that the Yet Another meme is really a *NIX thing, has always been; it's most popular there rather than in other systems, so I think that's enough reason for Yakuake and YaST to stay among the Notables.

The other examples objectively pale in comparison, being much more niche and less used than the above. Yabasic? BASIC is no longer relevant, and when it was, that one wasn't the interpreter of choice for most coders. "Yaws"? Please, we already have Apache and nginx — enough said. Yaboot? There's GRUB. YASARA is the nichest one there. And so on.

Please note how I maintained some of your deletions, for some particularly useless or filler examples (compare the original list with the current one). I agreed partially with your edit summary. I even changed the meekly instructive comment ("Please no redlinks or external links") into an order ("Do not add excessive examples. Also no redlinks or external links: add only those that have Wikipedia articles."), so it's taken more seriously. I do think that the Other examples should stay and that future editors should be free to add more if needed (with prudence and moderation, of course), especially if more notable examples arise one day, with more Yet Anothers being created and becoming widely relevant and used. I think you've missed my point. The article's job is to explain the naming convention. It is not to rank the notability, or fame, or any other measure, of things that use it. So while I don't disagree with your estimation of the various items, it's irrelevant.

The point of the examples is to demonstrate some of the names, particularly in areas it is used most and the breadth of that, so that the reader might better understand the naming in use. The fame of the resulting software, or whatever, is largely irrelevant. YaST is a reasonable and typical example. Yahoo is a good example because it extends the convention to a non-technical audience. But the second list does absolutely nothing. You may as well head it "More examples that just repeats what the previous list already shows. Someone decided these weren't famous enough, but we're going to list them here anyway." --Escape Orbit ^(Talk) 15:09, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

The different listings are more of a separation or segregation than a ranking, mmkay? I did not originally intend to rank them. No value judgment in listing; only separation of concerns notability + alphabetical sorting in both.

I say we should wait for more community feedback on this, other than our own. In any case, if the Other list is to be removed, along with the HTML comments surrounding it (although you ought to agree that the only resulting list should be open for expansion in case of more note-/list-worthy YAs coming about in the future), there should still be a way for the reader to find more examples outside the article. (As noted at the end of my revert summary: Anyway, "See also" makes the other examples redundant, so I've sensibly reduced their number.)

The current method under See also, with All pages with titles beginning with Yet Another or Yet another, is insufficient and incomplete: it misses those pages that start with YA or Ya, of which there are many (overwhelmingly in the latter, in particular). We should therefore create a category to house all the articles—regardless of page prefix—about programs (among other things) named in that wise, starting with all the Other examples (including the deleted), then link to that category under See also, replacing {{Look_from}}. ～ bytekast ^{[talk • cont • logs]} 16:25, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

Whether it was your intention or not, the article is ranking the examples. It says eight of them are "notable", while the others are not. You can explain how you've ranked them so, but nothing on the article reveals this to the reader. Both sections perform precisely the same job in the article, so this ranking appears to be the only thing that explains the second section's existence.

If you wish to create a category of "Things named using the acronym YA from Yet Another", then that might work and might be defining. --Escape Orbit ^(Talk) 13:20, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
