Edit request: founding date and early history

I am Chair of Yaxley FC and have a declared conflict of interest, so I am requesting this change rather than making it.

The article gives the club's founding as 1962, sourced to Blakeman's history of the Eastern Counties League. Contemporary newspaper reports, the club's own published history and the Peterborough & District League's own published history all record Yaxley football considerably earlier. The 1962 date may reflect a re-formation, or the club's first appearance in Eastern Counties League records, rather than its origin.

I propose the History section open with the following, with the existing 1962 material retained immediately after:

A team named Yaxley is referred to in contemporary press reports from the late-1800s. In November 1894 the Peterborough Express listed Yaxley among the village clubs of the Peterborough district invited to compete for a challenge cup presented by a Peterborough athletic outfitter. Yaxley appears in Stanground F.C.'s published fixture list for the 1896–97 season, with matches arranged at Yaxley in October 1896 and at Stanground in December 1896. Yaxley also appear in the season results published by Peterborough St Peter's College, whose reserve side drew 0–0 with Yaxley on 27 November 1897 and lost 5–2 to them on 19 February 1898.

The club's own history states that it was formed in 1900, with Yaxley Rovers as the forerunner of the present club. The Peterborough & District League records Yaxley Rovers among the founding members of its inaugural 1902–03 season, having the longest away journey of any club in the competition, and Yaxley Rovers appear in the league's published table in November 1902. The club's history up to the Second World War is not well documented.

The existing sentence should then be reworded to: "The club in its present form was established in 1962 and joined Division Three South of the Peterborough & District League..." retaining the Blakeman citation.

One further source I omitted above: the Peterborough Advertiser of 18 September 1901 lists Yaxley Rovers in Peterborough Star's fixture list for the 1901–02 season, including a match at Yaxley on 22 February 1902. I would suggest this sentence be placed after the 1898 reference and before the paragraph on the club's own history, as it is the earliest contemporary reference to the club under the name Yaxley Rovers. A further and earlier source. The Stamford Mercury of 9 March 1894 reports a match played at Yaxley in which Peterborough City beat Yaxley 7–1. This predates the November 1894 reference cited above and is the earliest match report I have located. I would suggest it open the proposed paragraph, with the wording amended to "A team named Yaxley is recorded playing football from at least March 1894." Consolidating the above into a single final proposal, to make this easier to action. Earliest reference: the Stamford Mercury of 9 March 1894 reports a match played at Yaxley in which Peterborough City beat Yaxley 7–1. This should replace the November 1894 reference as the opening sentence, amended to: "A team named Yaxley is recorded playing football from at least March 1894." The September 1901 reference (Peterborough Rovers Advertiser, fixture list showing Yaxley Rovers) should sit after the 1898 reference and before the paragraph on the club's own history, as previously proposed. Additionally, a source addressing the gap between this early period and 1962. A memoir by Jack and June Beeby, published by the Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network, records that the present-day club traces to a meeting in spring 1946, at which the name Yaxley Athletic was deliberately chosen to avoid inheriting unpaid fines associated with an earlier village club. I'd suggest this be added as a final sentence in the proposed paragraph, after "The club's history up to the Second World War is not well documented," along the lines of: "A locally published memoir records that the present-day club originates from a meeting in 1946, at which a new name was adopted to distinguish it from an earlier, unaffiliated village club."
