Overview
Wright-Patt Credit Union (WPCU) is a member-owned financial cooperative headquartered in Beavercreek, Ohio. Founded in 1932 by employees of Wright Field during the Great Depression, the organization has grown into the largest member-owned credit union in Ohio and one of the largest credit unions in the United States. WPCU serves individuals and businesses throughout portions of southwest and central Ohio through a network of member centers, ATMs, and shared branching locations nationwide. As of February 2026, the credit union reported more than $9.6 billion in assets and more than 526,000 members. WPCU is a state-chartered credit union federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Its subsidiary, myCUmortgage, LLC, provides mortgage services to credit unions and their members.
History
In 1932, during the Great Depression, a group of workers at Wright Field (which later became part of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) wanted a way to help each other through financial hardship. They pooled their money together in a shoebox, creating what was known as the "Sunshine Fund." Members could borrow from that fund when they needed help, embodying the credit union principle of people helping people.
That simple shoebox fund eventually evolved into what is now Wright-Patt Credit Union, which has grown from a small employee credit union into Ohio's largest member-owned credit union while still emphasizing the same cooperative mission.
