I changed it to this:

\inf_x

This is rendered as follows:

\inf is a standard operator name in TeX. The convention of putting the subscript directly below "inf" when it occurs in a "displayed" (as opposed to "inline") setting is built in to the software. Michael Hardy (talk) 12:30, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
