Willow Smith → ? – The subject has been professionally known mononymously as Willow for many years, and her current musical releases and press coverage consistently use that name. The article itself identifies her as known mononymously as WILLOW. I believe Willow (musician) better reflects her established professional/common name, while the parenthetical distinguishes her from other uses of "Willow". Artist&Architect (talk) 19:19, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
Proposed move
I believe the article should be moved from Willow Smith to Willow (musician) because Willow is the subject's established professional name. She has used the mononym throughout her musical career, and contemporary coverage and her musical releases consistently identify her as Willow/WILLOW.
The question of whether Wikipedia should reproduce her preferred all-caps styling as WILLOW is, in my view, separate from the more fundamental question of whether the article should use her professional name rather than her surname. I am therefore proposing Willow (musician) rather than WILLOW (musician) for the purposes of this discussion. Artist&Architect (talk) 19:19, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Comment - opposed to WILLOW per WP:ALLCAPS. Current torn on what the COMMONNAME is here, as no real argument on that has been given. WP:NATDAB favors Willow Smith at least. Sergecross73 msg me 19:44, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- I agree that the COMMONNAME question should be addressed. My argument for WILLOW is not simply that she styles her name in all caps, but that she has almost exclusively used WILLOW as her professional name, particularly throughout her adult music career. Her recent albums, Billboard artist profile, Spotify profile, Grammy Museum materials, major music press coverage, and other professional sources identify her as WILLOW, or occasionally "Willow," while “Willow Smith” is now used primarily in biographical contexts. - As for the point that “she is also an actress,” I agree that the article should accurately reflect that part of her career. However, her screen acting career was limited to three credits during childhood, with her last on screen acting appearance occurring when she was just nine years old. She has also publicly discussed her decision to "quit acting" as a child. In the sixteen years since, her career has been overwhelmingly centered on music: she has released nine studio albums and four EPs, toured internationally, and received major critical and industry recognition as a musician.
- Finally, I agree that WP:ALLCAPS means the capitalization itself should not determine the title; the relevant question is whether WILLOW is her established common name. Artist&Architect (talk) 07:02, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose per NATDAB. The surname provides sufficient disambiguation. She's also an actress, which adds leverage against pigeonholing her as a musician. Binksternet (talk) 23:35, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Leaning oppose per Binksternet. BD2412 T 03:40, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
Occupation as engineer? Producer? Arranger?
[edit]I have twice reverted the occupations of engineer, producer and arranger. Artist&Architect added these but they are not why Willow is famous. The listed occupations in the infobox should convey what Willow is famous for. She has co-produced an album of her own, but this is not an occupation. The occupation of producer is a person who goes around to other artists and produces their music. Arranger and engineer I have no idea why they were included. Binksternet (talk) 03:02, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying. I understand your position that the infobox occupations should primarily reflect the roles for which the subject is best known. My intention in adding “producer, engineer, and arranger” was not to add commentary, but to reflect her documented roles in the creation of her music. In fact, she has more credits as an engineer and arranger than she does as an (on screen) actress, and her only two Grammy Award nominations are for those roles. That said, I’m happy to defer to your judgement on whether these occupations meet the appropriate threshold for inclusion in the infobox. I apologize for any inconvenience. Artist&Architect (talk) 03:13, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, Binksternet is correct. It's merely an opening sentence, it's not supposed to define everything role she's had in her life. Major points only here. Sergecross73 msg me 10:53, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Well, she was literally Grammy-nominated for it, is that not major? 162 etc. (talk) 16:20, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Winning a Grammy would have made a critical difference, as with Mariah Carey's list of occupations. Binksternet (talk) 16:28, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Interesting argument. I was unaware that the threshold for including a professional occupation on Wikipedia was winning a Grammy Award, rather than being professionally credited and Grammy-nominated for that work. That seems like an unusually high and arbitrary standard. Could you explain the reasoning behind it? Artist&Architect (talk) 21:06, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- A Grammy nom is easy. A Grammy win is much harder.
- At the Mariah Carey page, there were several discussions of whether we should list the occupation of producer. She, too, only produces herself. Winning a Grammy for producing turned out to be the clincher. I'm just reporting what happened over there. If it was up to me, she would not be listed as producer despite the Grammy win. A person who is a professional producer works for others. A person who produces themselves is simply an involved artist. Binksternet (talk) 22:50, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying. I am particularly struck by your statement that, even despite Mariah Carey's Grammy win for producing, you personally would not consider her a producer. That suggests that the issue here is not really the Grammy threshold, but your own view that producing one's own music does not constitute being a professional producer. I don't see a basis for treating that personal definition as a general Wikipedia standard.
- Furthermore, Mariah Carey founded her own label, Crave Records (an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment), in 1997, where she signed and produced records for Allure, 7 Mile, and DJ Company. This would seem to directly contradict your assertion that she only produces her own music.
- You also characterize a Grammy nomination as “easy.” That's a rather extraordinary claim, particularly in a discussion about whether a Grammy-nominated professional credit is sufficiently significant to support an occupation in an encyclopedia article. A Grammy nomination may not be equivalent to a win, but I don't see why the absence of a win would make Willow's documented professional production work cease to be professional work. Artist&Architect (talk) 01:07, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Documented professional work does not always translate into career elements that contribute to notability. The main point here is that we should be following the published sources, not leading them. If the media don't say "Willlow the producer" then we should not be pushing that aspect. Binksternet (talk) 03:16, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- I agree that we should follow what reliable published sources say rather than make our own determinations about Willow's career. In that case, I think the relevant question is why you have insisted on labeling her an actress when her last on-screen acting credit was in 2010. Her press coverage in recent years overwhelmingly identifies her as a musician, rather than an actress. If we are truly following the sources rather than our own determinations about her career, I think that distinction is worth considering. Artist&Architect (talk) 04:51, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
