[edit]Edit request: BLP concern regarding sourcing of breakup sentence
[edit]This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
COI disclosure: I am Justin Cordle, the subject of the material discussed below. Per WP:COI I am not editing the article directly and am requesting review by uninvolved editors.
The article currently states:
- "The band broke up in 2016 due to lead singer Justin Cordle's extramarital affair."
This is sourced solely to an archived copy of a now-deleted personal blog post (justincordle.blogspot.com, archived 2 May 2016).
I believe this fails several policies:
1. WP:BLPSPS. Self-published sources may not be used for material about living persons except when published by the subject of the article. The subject of this article is the band, not me individually, so the exception does not apply here.
2. WP:ABOUTSELF. Even where self-published sources about oneself are permitted, they may not be used for claims involving third parties. A statement about why a five-member band dissolved is a claim about other living people, several of whom are named in this article.
3. WP:SYNTH. The cited letter is an announcement of departure. The article converts it into a causal explanation for the band's dissolution. That causal link is the editor's inference, not a statement in the source.
4. WP:PROPORTION. No secondary reliable source cited in this article attributes the breakup to this cause. The one secondary source present (NewReleaseToday) reports the departure and the remaining members' plans without asserting a reason.
Proposed replacement:
- "Cordle announced his departure from the band in January 2016 in an open letter posted to his personal blog. The remaining members subsequently formed As We Ascend."
This retains the documented facts and the existing citation while removing the unsourced causal characterisation. I am not asking that my departure be omitted — only that it be described in terms the sources actually support.
If editors consider a reason for the breakup to be due weight, I would ask that it be sourced to a secondary reliable source rather than to an archived personal blog.
Thank you for considering this. Hilltop2026 (talk) 05:47, 3 September 2026 (UTC)
Partly done: I have tweaked the wording to satisfy the BLP and SYNTH policy concerns. I don't believe PROPORTION applies here, as this is a relevant fact that is not unduly focused upon in the article. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 13:14, 3 September 2026 (UTC)- And just to clarify, WP:BLPSPS says not to use self-published sources as sources of material about a living person, unless written or published by the person themselves (emphasis mine); it doesn't say
the subject of the article
