Coal industry?

[edit]

Pickering is described as having worked in the coal industry in Victoria. But there is no coal industry in Victoria. Almost all coal mining is part of the power industry where the shitty brown coal in the Latrobe Valley is dug up to be used by the companies that make electricity. It is not a separate industry in its own right. I suspect we have a Queensland perspective appearing here. HiLo48 (talk) 01:52, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Age article says “ The 43-year-old single father has said in interviews he lost his job at a BHP coal mine in central Queensland during the pandemic after the mining giant mandated COVID-19 vaccines for employees.” Ponyshine (talk) 03:03, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
AH, that seems likely. He did abandon the state he now wants to represent. Maybe we could add Qld to the text. HiLo48 (talk) 05:56, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Conspiracy theorist

[edit]

The Age and ABC - media of record - both wrote articles recently outlining the conspiracy theorist promoted by Mr Pickering. In my view, his notability is heavily focussed on this, at least until he is elected to be a member of parliament.

another editor removed this reference, citing a media source that Google tells me: “One News Australia is an online right-of-centre media outlet that investigations by ABC News revealed was rebranded from the "One Nation Supporters Network" Facebook page. While both the platform and Pauline Hanson's One Nation party deny formal ties, the site heavily promotes the party.”

this is clearly not credible news. Recommend returning ‘conspiracy theorist’ to lede. I’m not judging the man on it - it is simply where his notability comes from. Ponyshine (talk) 23:52, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Noting that his status as an army veteran is noted in the lede, despite this being far less notable then his history in the conspiracy world. Ponyshine (talk) 07:24, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
