How and why

[edit]

the article does not explain why this particular law became targeted at this particular minority. (Really I think trans women specifically—were trans men targeted to any extent?) There needs to be some mention of the real phenomenon of transgender sex workers. jnestorius(talk) 22:24, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Walking While Trans → Section 240.37 of the New York State Penal Law – The current title is an unofficial nickname given by the law's opponents; therefore, I propose that we rename it to Section 240.37 of the New York State Penal Law (or similar, open to suggestions) and redirect Walking While Trans there, so that people looking for it by nickname can still get to it easily. Oppose. Per NPOVNAME, a title can be non-neutral if it is the COMMONNAME "as evidenced through usage in a significant majority of English-language sources". A quote-search for "Walking While Trans" returns ten times as many Google Scholar results as a quote-search for "Section 240.37", same for normal Google. Absent a showing that Section 240.37 is comparably widely used, NPOVNAME applies. Also, "Walking While Trans" is a more natural and recognizable title, which are both part of the AT, and "Section 240.37 of the New York State Penal Law" is certainly less concise. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 20:36, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oppose per leek. Seems the proposed name is a handful and suggests undueness, compared to what the common name is User:Bluethricecreamman (Talk·Contribs) 14:09, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oppose per leek. In addition to this being the common name, it's the only reason the law is notable. In any event, a better way of doing the proposed title would be New York Penal Law § 240.37. voorts (talk/contributions) 13:49, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oppose -- Newspapers.com search for 2010 (chosen to eliminate certain false positives) to current finds just 3 relevant references to "Section 240.37". "Walking while trans" has 98 results, and checking the first 20, all relevant, no false positives. Will note that most (not all) of results don't upper-case it. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 14:27, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
In the interest of completeness, I should note that "loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense" gets 52 results for that period, but they're all from the police blotter of a single paper (The Post-Standard of Syracuse). -- Nat Gertler (talk) 14:45, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oppose - WP:NPOVNAME is clear that the current name is acceptable. Moreover, "Section 240.37 of the New York State Penal Law" is a fairly confusing and obfuscating name. Gbear605 (talk) 15:53, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I disagree that the proposed name is confusing. It's very clearly referring to a specific section of the Penal Law. voorts (talk/contributions) 15:59, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
