Requested move 4 June 2026

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. Moving dab page to WOXY (disambiguation); moving WOXY 94.5 FM to WOXY. (non-admin closure) Jacksonvil (alt) (talk) (contribs) (Main account) 05:19, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

WOXY 94.5 FM → WOXY (FM) – While the recent renaming of this article from WYDB was done in good faith–per the naming conventions in this topic area, US radio station articles are titled at the current official call sign–the title chosen is nonstandard. While clearly intended to disambiguate this WOXY from the previous use of the call sign on WKRP-FM, the standard in this topic area is to use the silent "(FM)" disambiguator in cases where it is not sufficiently enough of a primary topic to have no disambiguator at all, with a hatnote providing further clarity if needed. (WOXY's situation is further complicated by the existence of a separate article for the defunct WOXY.com webcast that continued a previous format of the prior WOXY/current WKRP-FM.) Support without delay This is not controversial, but it was confusing, and it probably required at least a page mover to correctly implement. I am also going to ping HLachman so they see this discussion and the move rationale. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 06:55, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I did it that way because it was the only thing I could think of. I'm seeing three possibilities:
(1) Do nothing.
(2) Move as per the above.
(3) "WOXY" (a current disambig page) -> "WOXY (disambiguation)", and "WOXY 94.5 FM" -> "WOXY". The idea is that "(FM)" seems to be used more for disambig with other current stations (AM, TV, etc.) and not so much for disambig with former usages.
I don't have a strong preference for any of the choices, but (3) feels "cleaner" in some way. -- HLachman (talk) 07:51, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps the argument in favor of (2) over (3) is that WOXY on 97.7 has a long history (97X, etc.), and people who are looking for that history get to it quicker on a search for "WOXY". Again, not a strong feeling either way. -- HLachman (talk) 07:58, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Even considering that, I might still lean toward (3), because if "(FM)" is considered as being a disambiguator, then it should disambiguate an "FM thing" from some other thing that's "not FM". And the former usage was FM. (Just thinking aloud here.) -- HLachman (talk) 09:15, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@HLachman This is where NCBC gets funky, even compared to . One reason for silent disambiguators is after a recent call sign change like this. The primary topic for WOXY in significance is the 97.7 station (now WKRP-FM), and the novelty of its new call sign will mean it holds a pageview lead. But the current station has right to the title WOXY (FM). That's why (2) is what our policies and guidelines provide. (3) also works if we do a double hatnote like so: Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 17:01, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

OK. Just for the record (and following the comment process), I'm entering my recommendation below.

  • Support the move, as in choice (2) or (3), preference for (3) (for reasons given above). As for the hatnote, I hadn't thought much about it, I guess the above suggestion is OK, except perhaps for some technical details (as it wasn't in Oxford to 2026, only to 2009, apparently). Also, "former online radio station" sounds more accurate. Perhaps just use a more minimalist hatnote? E.g., "For other uses, see WOXY (disambiguation)" (like in articles "WLW" and "WAIF"). -- HLachman (talk) 15:55, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
