Title

Per WP:BELARUSIANNAMES the title should be Vyetka, though it may be possible to argue that Vetka is the common name. In the meantime, it should be moved to Vyetka. Mellk (talk) 08:34, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

I think Vetka might be the better move here as almost everything I am finding on google references Vetka. In contrast, most of the results for Vietka or Vyetka are related to Kirov. I also want to comment that there is an unsourced note on the Vietka District page indicating that Vietka is indeed the offical transliteration. I am going to relist and notify WP Belarus. I see "did you mean Vyatka" when searching for Vyetka but the results are still primarily about the town in Belarus. For Vetka it is a bit mixed, including results about other things. I do not see a clear common name here as a result. Mellk (talk) 21:53, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Population of 40,000?

This doesn't sound right. The article says:

• The population of Vetka increased to 7,200 by 1897.
• The population of Vyetka in 1939 was 6,000 people at the beginning of the World War II.
• as many as 40,000 were resettled in areas away from radiation effect, and the remaining population of the town was reported as only 7,000 on the first anniversary of the disaster.

Where's this 40,000 number suddenly coming from? The towns population seemed to be quite stable around 6,000-7,000 for over a century. But the article randomly throws in the 40,000 number twice (the second instance being Vyetka becoming a town of about 40,000 people around 1730). This looks wrong. It seems that the population numbers of the Vyetka District are being conflated with the population numbers of Vyetka town. That becomes rather clear if we check Vyetka district#Population where it says:

• 1979: 44,261
• 1989: 35,321

The statement about Chernobyl almost makes it sound as if the town's population became six times smaller than it used to be, going down from 40k to just 7k, when in fact, 7k was just a regular population size for the town. The district as a whole lost only around 9,000 in total. Nakonana (talk) 20:40, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
