Historic vs. contemporary use
[edit]This article depicts "Volkssport" as a part of Nazi terminology. This is not correct.
Historically, the Nazis hijacked the term. Before and after, "Volkssport" is just a marker for sports without the goal to compete. See de:Volkssport. Commonly it refers to Hiking, Swimming, Cycling and Ski Hiking.
"Volkssport" is the term used by the IVV International People's Sports Federation https://ivv-web.org and their German-language national chapters (DVV Deutscher Volkssport-Verband).
It goes even so far that because of the international scope of Volkssport clubs (see Wandervögel), Neo-Nazis are shunning the term.
Keeping a "Volkssport" Lemma using only the specific Nazi abuse of the term will influence the modern use. If in your neighbourhood some "Volkssport" federation (mostly IVV) is organising an event, this most probably is a meeting of hiking and/or cycling enthusiasts, not a Neo-Nazi rally. --~2025-43461-57 (talk) 10:26, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
