The word also exists in Estonian, with the same spelling (verst), but as far as I know, it seems to be used colloquially for a kilometre. PeepP 19:21, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
poem gone, article still messy

Probably an archaic spelling. In context it is referring to an area under Russian influence i.e. Central Asia & Caspian Sea.
