33 vs. 78, vinyl vs. shellac?

i'm not an expert on old recordings, but i was curious about the V-disks and where they fit into the transition from 78 to 33, and shellac to vinyl, but the info was not here. 68.174.110.168 (talk) 16:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Modern vinyl can be directly traced to the development of the V-Disc, as shellac was too heavy and brittle to ship overseas. It doesn't really fit into the 78-33 timeline. V-Discs always run at 78rpm. The 33rpm speed had already been in use for several years, although not for consumer purposes with the exception of Victor's failed 1931-33 effort. I agree that the V-Disc's significance to the development of vinyl should be in the article. 78.26 (talk) 18:02, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

That would be per side. A typical 10-inch disc standard groove-per-inch can hold about 3.5 minutes of music, so that would be 7 minutes for both sides. A typical 12-inch disc can hold about 4.5 minutes, but by decreasing groove depth and moving the grooves closer together, it is possible to get nearly 7 minutes per side for a 12-inch 78rpm disc.
