Etymology

What is "meze"? Greek for "greater" is μείζων; "meze" could be "μεζε", "μεζη", "μηζε", or "μηζη", of which only μεζέ has an entry, but it means "snack". phma (talk) 02:00, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

@PierreAbbat: the derivation from μείζων (meizon) is supported by sources, including Hyam, R. & Pankhurst, R.J. (1995), Plants and their names : a concise dictionary, Oxford: Oxford University Press, ISBN 978-0-19-866189-4, p.505. It alludes to the three outer tepals being much larger than the three inner ones. Substituting e for Greek ei is not uncommon; remember that the genus name is a Latinization of the original Greek. Also the originator of the name, Richard Anthony Salisbury, doesn't seem to have been a strong scholar of classical languages. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:09, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
