Transom in architecture links with fr:Imposte or fr:Vasistas, which is a special imposte; Transom for a ship links with fr:Tableau arrière. The phrase "it came in over the transom" has been used by publishers talking about unsolicited manuscripts. The given definitions do not capture how "transom" is used in court filings. A transom filing is one made as a court clerk's office opens in the morning for a document that was due the previous day, typically a day when the clerk's office was not open until midnight. Transom filings can be made for briefs and other documents due on a specific day, but are not advisable for notices of appeal or other documents for which timely filing is a jurisdictional requirement.
