Misuse of "alternate"

Throughout this article, the word "alternate" is used (as an adjective) where the intended meaning is in fact the adjective "alternative".

But even this substitution does not make sense in the article. If something is in this universe at one moment, then at a later moment must it not be in the same universe?

What would characterize its being in a different universe at a later moment? If two events in some sort of space-time continuum can be connected by a continuous path within that continuum (even if this space-time is very different from our current conception of our own) ... does that not mean the two events lie in the same universe?
